Couple questions...

how much light do they block?
how hot do they get with xenons?

Matt

How illegal are they in states like California?

Gil-galad 09-04-2008 11:29 AM

Interesting to see how well the "cute" designs are faring.

C'est la vie, not for me...my MINI is not "cute." But to each, his/her own...

Are there degrees of illegality?

Seems pretty cut and dry to me, they either are legal or they are not.

Next we'll here how you are almost pregnant.

Legal CYA Stuff 1st, The Headlight Eyes are for off road use only! CYA

I have researched most of the states in the Midwest where I live and can not find a law against the covers. They seem to fall into the same area as the yellow tinted lens and the smoked lens on many cars/truck and SUV running around.
I have run them well over a year now and have never once been pulled for them. I was pulled over for my front tint and he said nothing about the headlights and he did see them. I've had two cops at gas stations stop and tell me they look great.
None of my customers have had to remove them due to police. At night with the lights on you can't even see them.

Hello Matt, thanks for the great question. They work on all MINI lights and have not melted off any MINI. In fact we use the heat to install them. I guess if you let left the lights on High Beam parked long enough anything would discolor or melt. But under normal use there have not been any issues.

They do not make any particular impact on night driving and can't been seen at night with lights on. I have "tested" a MINI in a dark closed garage, engine off  , with an Eye on one side and the other without there was a hard to see differences but once one the road there was no visible differences.

How about a set of full color black about the darkness of 30% tint?

That's a thought, I'll visit with my printer to see if we can pull that off. Would you want it to look like glass? ie Gloss finish?

Might also check with NAM vendor http://www.lylesvinylstyles.net/ for tinted headlight glass I know he does that and it looks great.

mini_muddeatr 09-04-2008 05:26 PM

I haven't thought about the gloss level but I think if you offer any solid color to match or accent the MINI's body color. I am tossed between a solid red to match or a solid black to accent.

If you have some small samples that would make it easier to decide since I haven't seen anybody with solid red headlights yet.

That is worth a test. Please email me your address so I can ship you a set in exchange for pics of the installed product. email info@autoxcooper.com and I'll send you a CR set of solid headlight covers.

email sent.

You are 100% correct. That is why there seem to be no two MINI's the same. Viva la difference.

I had my printer run off a Red piece for me to try on my tail lights of my CR MINI. I'm not happy with the look. For some reason the solid color red looks pink once on the car. I'll take it to him Monday and see if we can adjust the coloring to better match before I print your solid test eyes. I like the look of the covered tail lights. I might also try white to match the roof.

Hey is your pepper white a good match? that would be awesome to cover the tails in body color

AutoXCooper.com 09-07-2008 08:49 PM

The issue seems to be two things, one the vinyl is right next to the paint so any diff in color is very easy to see and the headlights are clear without any color behind them to impact the visual look of the color. I'll need to test some more colors and see how to best match the tails. We have not had any issues matching the fronts.

checkercoop 09-07-2008 08:52 PM

Oh ok yeah I could see how the red would throw the color off. Would this black perforated vinyl be a better solution for the tails than using any tinting/smoked vinyl? Seems the other stuff hurts light output, but your perforated stuff should allow a lot more light right?
