I have to say I was disappointed when I asked via email if he could provide pictures of some of the S decals in colors that are not currently on his website. He attempted to describe the color with text, and I was told to buy a set and see for myself.

At something close to $20 shipped (going from memory) for stickers, I think I'll look elsewhere. A little effort or at least a better attitude may have saved a customer.

Quote: I wonder how long the doming process actually takes...the total number of actual manufacturing hours involved....even for something custom like a puffy sticker....that might shed some light on things...but still, I agree, 2 months is too long to wait for a sticker, regardless of how complex it is.

That is a great question and I'm sure this will shed some light.

To start there is only one company that supplies the material to make the domed decals and they are even smaller than I am as a company. One time they went on vacation and it took me 3 weeks just to get the material. On average it takes me a week and a half to get the material and I only buy what I need. Another drawback is this product has a shelf life. If I don't use the material with in a month than I have to chuck it. So to start I usually have just enough material to dome what I need to. Lately I've been buying a lot more so I can have some in stock. If something goes wrong with the doming process and I have to make a new set, that's another Week and a half before I can make more. There is also a curing process. Each sticker that is domed take 48 hours to cure to the touch. If the decal is going on a car or out side( that would be all my product) then that adds another week to the cure time. Then there is shipping. Priority Mail is about 3 days. The Side markers are going out in standard first class mail witch takes about 7 business days to get to the east coast. So lets see here.
1.5 weeks to get the material. 1 week to get the product made and domed. 1.5 weeks to cure. 1 week to get to you.

That's 5 weeks on a smooth business day where I'm not backed up from an event. So you can see what happens if I send them out and they are wrong somehow.

This is only the preparation process. Each custom order has to be printed to the size, Color and Art requested. Some of this I don't even charge extra for. Each different color of vinyl has to be loaded, art set up, printed and then cut to size. This process takes about a half hour for each color vinyl. On this round of doming I had 7 different colors of vinyl I had to use. So that is one full day gone.

Now for the doming. Everything has to be set up. The material is pushed out of a mixing tub as I dome each sticker. Once I start this process I can't stop until it is finished or I have to start over with a new mixing tube. This means that all emails, phone calls, bathroom breaks and eating is put on hold till I'm finished with a batch. This last batch of domed decals took me 2 days! Just to dome!
Now if I made a set of centercaps and they are the wrong size. I now have to order more material. Get more orders that I can do all at the same time and start the process all over again.

Meanwhile I'm still getting more orders, emails and phone calls that I have to take care.

2 months is not unreasonable to wait for domed stickers. And you get what you pay for. As far as I know I'm the only one that make such a product and that's probably because I'm the only one crazy enough to do it.

The only option I have to make things go any quicker is not do custom work. And that is what these MINIs are all about.

So the choice is really up to you and has nothing to do with how I run my business. If you want custom that you'll have to wait for it.

Like I said we are doing EVRYTHING in our power to make sure that orders are sent out as quickly as possible and communications is taken care of.

Very helpful and informative. Maybe you can put a descriptor or expected delivery times for custom orders on the web site so people know what to expect...like, "it will take 5-6 weeks for delivery, and sometimes up to 2-2.5 months...please be patient."

If I knew the entire story up front, I would not have gotten so worked up about it and frustrated. Then again, if I knew a custom order took so long, I might not have ordered, but that is a personal choice.

I very muchly agree. If a product is going to take that long to be delivered the website should definitely state the time frame up front. That would solve many of the problems I have seen posted as no one would ever anticipate that 4 stickers carry a 2 month lead time

Exactly - it is all about setting the right expectation and then being in communication if that expectation will not be met (and I guess setting the expectation about communication and how long it might take for you to respond to emails, etc).

yeah, I read that...but 2-4 weeks is a LOT different than 2-3 months. and that info should be put in a more visible area, for better customer relations, etc. That is all we are saying, just a suggestion, but it is his business afterall, so if he is happy with how it is stated, then so be it. If it were me, I would put a disclaimer under each item, may take up to 8 weeks for delivery...maybe more.

I appreciate the prompt response from Mike re: my order after posting my woes on this thread and I completely understand that the process can take up to two months to prepare... NOW.

I don't have a problem with waiting for something if I'm told up front or even along the way that it will take longer than expected, but I was under the impression from many communications that first I would receive them prior to MOTD, then I would receive them shortly after May 14, then this last time was June 5. I understand that they are now in the mail and that thrills me, but like I stated before, a little communication goes a long way.

I also know that many customers ordered their puffy S's prior to me and have received them since then. Whether he had a lot of the regular colors in stock or many made up to deliver prior to me is understandable, but I know that he made a batch up prior to MOTD, after I ordered mine, and was not informed that he had run out of pink, so you can understand my disapointment.

I may regret this.

I'm only commenting here because I have some personal experience of what AC must be going through.

Some of us vendors are very small and if the public really likes our product and the business grows faster than expected there are going to be growing pains.

You might say "hire more help" but that's not the easiest thing to to when you've built your business on the design and manufacturing that you handle yourself. These are decisions that are left to the individual business owner to make. I hired help in 05 and it exploded in my face.

I've had my own share of shipping delays and folks coming on the boards to complain, which is their right. I'm usually on the board within a few hours of learning of the post to explain and to make it right.

To expect and receive satisfaction is the first right of the paying customer.
To try to hurt the business of a vendor by public posting is sketchy.
If all you really want is your order, then why not make that your mission?

Doming--I've researched it entirely and found that it's a pain in the butt to do yourself on a small scale. But when you're offering custom colors that's really all you can do. I've put doming on the back burner for now but have explored farming it out to a shop that is better equipped to handle the process than I am. Plus I don't really like working around epoxy resin.

That said, there are many many suppliers of doming supplies.

I'm sure Mike has resolved your issue for you and hope that you come back and let us all know how it worked out.

Please think twice before warning people to boycott or not patronize a business as small as us. Yes, honest and prompt communication can prevent this kind of thing but sometimes it doesn't. People have spent money and have waited.

Your issue may be resolved within days, a week or month, but these posts live forever.

Cheers.

Jeff

Oh..and to compare ordering and delivering a car from a multinational corporation like BMW with a network of dealers to ordering custom wheel centers from a small designer is like comparing apples to apple trucks.

Just to be clear:

Like I said in my earlier post, I've been really trying to be as understanding as possible in this situation. If you all knew me, you'd see that I have very little patience and that I have shown a lot of restraint in posting my frustrations.

I knew that Mike was under a lot of pressure at MOTD and tried not to take it personally when he seemed rude, heck, Waylen from Way Motor Works was so keyed up it was amusing... he's usually so calm...

I believe the work that AC does is amazing and I wish them the very best in their business.

I will most definitely post something when I receive my S's and I'm sure I'm going to love them... heck... they're pink... I have to love them...

I hope that this post will result in customers understanding the company's process a little more and will help them be a little more patient in the length of time it takes to receive a product from the master, but I also feel that this post has also raised some communication issues that needed to be addressed as well.

Customer service in general just isn't what is used to be regardless if you're a small business or a large business... I don't see a change in our future with that one, if anything I see a decline, I can only hope that our MINI community will try hard to keep their customer service to the best of standards.

I ordered a set of the blue S's before thre Dragon, to be picked up there. I was told I would have a set there, so, I visited the booth to get the emblems, and lo and behold, I was told they could not find the ones they saved for me. Or, they were sold by accident. Either way, it was a month later before I FINALLY got them. The communication was so-so, to say the least.
However, and I think this is the point that needs to be made, although I definitely think there needs to be some reasonable expectations made up from so that everyone understands what to expect from one another, onice I FINALLY got them, they were great. They were easy to put on, and they look awesome. A truly great, custom product I could be proud to put on my car. Now was it worth the wait? Yes. Do I wish I had known it would be a month so I wasn't checking the mail everyday hoping they would be there? Yes. But it is a custom piece, and it does look good. I just think the guy could get a little help to get caught up for a short time...

Knowing Mike, and knowing his work, I will put my two cents in. Mike has done ALL of the graphics on Soulfire...Some of you may have seen him, the CRAZY EB/W with all the dragons..if not, you will, look at JustJAY's Sig.
Getting a hold of Mike, the easiest way is by phone. then follow up that with an email reminding him of what you talked about. He is busy..We know that.
Understand that the summer is the BUSIEST time for him. Lets see, since March, there was AMVIV, then about a month later, was MOTD, then a few weeks later, MINI Meet West, then MINIs in the Mountains.. I think he has/is going to ALL those National events.... On top of that, he and his wife are it. Really he is the ONLY one doing work. This is a very small family business. Mike puts ALL this time in his work. I really appreciate his work. His quality is above any that I have ever seen. Cecilia will be only done by Aesthetic Creations, no doubt. And we do all custom work... So with all that he had to do to get prepared between AMVIV and MOTD he designed 2, yes I said 2 custom designs for us and we were only expecting him to be able to do 1! He is amazing.
Lots of luv Mike, keep up the stressful and great work!

I am sorry that you all are having troubles, really I am. There may be no excuse, since I don't know your problems, but all I have to say about him is good stuff. And I will keep using his designs again and again and again. I will wait forever if I have to. His work is that quality.

I just ordered a set of black S's last week and I had them in 5 business days. My dealings with AC have been great so far. Thought i'd comment because personally I've had a good experience.

Sorry to those that haven't

By the way, the S's look and fit waaaaaaaaay better that I thought they would

I'm sure it just because we didn't special order
For real tho, they seem like a quality product. I did use a little better adesive than what came on them but over all a great product. You'll be happy once they come. I'm sure AC is taking care of it right now

I've had three excellent transactions with Mike and AC and I have to agree that this sounds like growing pains. I'm not making excuses - a 2 month wait is indeed a LONG time - but I personally am happy to wait for items from a business that is so supportive of the MINI community. I think the products and service to this point have been so outstanding that they are just overwhelmed with the response from all of US ordering stuff!

Again - no excuses, 2 months is a long time and a brief phone call and/or email to the customers that are/were waiting probably would have avoided this whole thing.

I'm not trying to rub it in, but I ordered some UJ hub centers from Mike at the end of May and within 8 days they were on my MINI. I have purchased several items from AC without one hitch. I had a chance to meet Mike at MITM last year as he installed Matilda's bonnet & boot stripes. Very nice guy and very professional.

Sure, rub it in MiniMaybee... j/k...

Just so you all understand, because you seem to be missing the point...

I'm okay with waiting forever for a product.

What I'm not okay with is not receiving a product when I'm told it will be done without any communication to the contrary. That is what happened in my instance and what it sounds like happened in ronmichael's as well.

It took some considerable time for the carbon domed "S" badges I ordered to arrive, and one was damaged. But Hannah replaced it (mailed to my doorstep) within 48 hours of a PM.

Worth the wait. Pics to come. :-) They really look great.

A/C deivered within the FAQ stated timeframe (4-5 weeks), so I really have no complaint. Granted that was before MOTD. Seems like the usual growing pains are in place here, like with many small businesses that deliver a product in demand.

Oh, and Hannah is nothing but nice in her customer relations.

But addressing the thread title... "Totally unreliable?"

Hardly. Just swamped.

On the way back from MOTD Mike and I brainstormed ideas on how to handle quadruple the business we were used to and implemented numerous strategies in organizing, communicating, and getting as many orders as we could out in about a quarter of the time. For the most part this has worked quite well, and I'm so very happy that many of you can attest to this. There have been a couple more tweeks we've needed to make such as confirming Paypal registered addresses. I am very sorry for those of you who are still waiting for your orders. I just packed and shopped a massive amount of centercaps and custom S's, so you'll be getting them soon! I'm confidant that this will not happen again as I'm letting people know upon ordering how long it will realistically take to get their orders. I'm sorry I wasn't able to provide that service for a couple of you and hope that our efforts after the fact will prove our intentions, which is solely to make you happy. I see how hard Mike works every day and how well he's doing to get things out as quick as he can and assure you he loves his job and works quite hard to ensure the best quality merchandise and service he can humanly offer. We've learned from our mistakes and appreciate them being brought to our attention. Communication and time of delivery being among them!

I do need you to know, however, that starting threads on NAM is not a good way to get our attention. One of the things I was doing to save Mike time was browsing NAM for anything related to us good or bad and keeping Mike up with it. Only I just don't have the time to do that anymore and to be perfectly honest I started having anxiety attacks just coming here. I have personally been treated quite hatefully over a couple customer service relations and I had to accept I'm not the right personality for it! So neither of us are on NAM except for occassionally as recreation, enjoying the Mini Community. I've stated this numerous times on our site and on NAM, but I'm available via e-mail for FRIENDLY order status updates but hopefully I'll beat ya to it. Mike makes sure to fully get through his e-mail at least once a week but spends individual time on each one including design and mock ups, etc. so it takes awhile. The best way to reach him is calling him! He'll usually answer! When he actually has down time he sometimes sits with his phone in his hand. He's a nice guy! He'll take care of you!

To sum up:
So sorry, seriously won't happen again!
Call Mike he'll gladly take care of you.
Posting mean things on NAM - we probably will never even know it was here! But I'm glad you feel better!

Motor on! Rock on! Carry on! Find something fun to do that makes you happy!
