Factory JCW air filter type?
 

I haven't attempted to open my air box yet, has some torx screws and the JCW strut brace to get past.

However, I'm getting some conflicting info on the type of filter replacement the car takes.

2009 Factory JCW. Does it take a flat panel filter or cone.

I've Googled the heck out of this, and the answers are all over the place.

I do believe it is the same as any Mini S filter. My dealer changed mine at the last service even though it looked to be pretty clean.

I think the cone filter comes with A certain dealer installed JCW kit.

I just cleaned the acorns out of my air filter box on my 2009 JCW clubman and the filter was FLAT not a cone. I also took some 1/4" wire screen and made a cover for the air intake. This intake is located next to the driver side headlamp. Keeps those pesky chipmunks from using the filter box as there safe deposit box. Take it easy,But take it. Ken R.

Mine is Flat and Factory stock. The part number listed on RealOEM.com is accurate.

Factory JCW will have the same panel as the R56 S's. The cones are only in the JCW kit version; that intake and related filter (and gasket since filter forms the gasket on the factory JCW's and S's) can be purchased separately.

Can someone direct me to where to look for the part no. on RealOEM.com? I went there and put the last seven of my VIN in. It recognizes my car, but I don't see air filter listed in any of the menus below. My choices include engine, fuel system, etc., but no air filter in any of the menus.

I don't think consumable parts (like filters, tires, etc.) are listed on RealOEM; but even if they are, although the site is a good resource, it isn't very intuitive (as you're finding)... :roll:

As nearly as I can ascertain, the MINI part number for the engine air filter (which I also believe is the same as the Cooper S) is 13 71 7 568 728. You can probably do a Google search for that part number and find any number of external (i.e., non-dealer) sources who sell it.

Perhaps a good way to verify the part number is to examine the one you currently have installed; if it's an OEM filter, it's probably got the part number stamped on it somewhere...

I found it's always there. Just a question of where... In this case, the non intuitive "Fuel Prep System" category..., part #2. Picked a 2009 R56 JCW w/ 4/09 build date to pull that page.

See prior post for the "normal" filter for a factory second gen JCW. Meanwhile, here is the "cone" type used with the JCW kit upgrade, in this case for a 2010 build like my S, but again here the year doesn't really matter as long as it's second gen. S. Under the R56 "S" choices, and here listed under Engine--Accessories. Yes, finding the JCW add on stuff can be a bit of a treasure hunt, but so far I have tracked it all down somewhere in their listings.

Is there an actual advantage to the "cone" type filter and filter box used with the JCW kit upgrade over the factory MCS set up. WMW claims that the JCW cone filter box is as good as many aftermarket CAI's, http://www.waymotorworks.com/jcw-int...6-r55-r57.html.

Have never seen a back to back dyno test, but...
 

from some basic physical measurements I can say the cone has about 50% more surface area than the panel--around 100 sq. in. total. Of course it would be a lot more involved to tear apart all the pleating to measure the total paper surface area. But at first blush, a lot more than you might guess since they both fit into a case that otherwise is pretty similar. Whether the turbo can use this surface area for the air draw, can't be sure.

Thanks MP1.6T. I'll wait a bit. The car is still new and I'm still getting used to it. I was thinking the JCW box for warranty reasons. My ultimate choice is the DoS CAI.

Having watched the boards on he topic for a while, you might review the posts. A few interesting ones I have seen are from Europe, particularly one or two from apparently literally Autobahn drivers where high speeds are legal. The net being, in at least some cases CAI's are reducing top power, the opposite of what is expected. There is the sound effect, but that's never been my objective.

For me, I settled on the JCW cone filter approach, both for warranty reasons (2010) as well as a modest performance expectations for anything intake anyway. As I poked more, I also came upon the JCW intake hose that runs from the filter box to the turbo; not a lot of posts there, but another mod tweak some like. Look at the realOEM site and you will see the different part number from the S model to the JCW part. The JCW part is semi hard plastic (which would prevent any collapse under vacuum), while the S part is a reinforced ribbed rubber one.

MP1.6T, do you mind share the dimension of the cone filter. I am thinking of swapping my Factory JCW air box to the JCW kit version. But i want to make sure there is a aftermarket cone available.

The Piper Cross cone filter from ECS is a direct replacement. Cost is $49.42.

I have checked your (ECS Tuning) website and it cost US$66.06 for shipping & handling to Singapore whereas the filter is only US$49.42.

Unless i found a way yo get it cheaper.
