Creaking noise when turning the steering wheel?

My steering wheel makes a creaking sound when I turn it far to the left and to the right. It doesn't make a noise if I'm between the 10 o clock and 2 o clock positions. Its only when I'm turning the wheel past 180 degrees that I hear the creaking. I can't seem to pinpoint where the sounds is coming from. Other than the noise, everything functions well.

Anyone else experience the same or have a fix?

mechanic found it. Upper strut mount failed. Exact problem I have

I took it to a mechanic and he confirmed that it was worn front strut mount. Recommended replacement, however, he said it would be costly since I have electronic/adaptive suspension. Can I ask how much your repair was?

it was around $600-700 aud. Wasn’t much to do both. They sent it to Pedders to fit to strut

Yes this was a thing with the Gen 1 and Gen 2 MINIs, mine did it. On the F54/F60 the NON EDC/DDC has a bunch of aftermarket. OEM EDC/DDC is 31306892618 Just Vibracoustic for now ( https://www.vibracoustic.com/en/) , which is OEM on a bunch of MINI parts. Just added it . :) So that can save you money on the parts.

So the MINI part without the MINI logo.

I do all my own work, but they will have to take the front shocks out which will have some labor/ most places my guess is 500-ish plus cost of parts/

Dealership will be 150hr min labor rate and should be more.

My dealer says normal I don’t think so , going to try a different dealer

What is the expected mileage for this to occur on an F60 Hybrid? I'm stating Hybrid assuming it will be heavier and work suspension components harder.
I had to replace the front strut tophats on my E36. It is easy enough to do if you get a spring compression kit - Harbor Freight.Nearly impossible to do without one. Just make sure you have it aligned after.

Picked up a 19 F60 S with adaptive suspension with just 22k miles on it and I seem to have this creaking noise as well when turning. It sounds to me like it is coming from the steering shaft area itself and I want to blame the grommet in the firewall. A couple of cars ago, my nissan juke made the same noise and a bit of silicone spray on the firewall grommet silenced it. It seem the grommet on these is protected by a bash plate of some kind. Maybe I'll do some disassembly and try that.

What exactly is failing on these strut mounts? Can it be prevented with some coating of silicone grease, etc? I know silicone does not break down rubber like some regular greases can. My Fiat 500 Turbo that this countryman replaced had ONE fault its entire life, some suspension noise on certain bumps and this was failed strut mounts, a common fault of the platform but it made zero noise when turning.

Check the shaft, most are from the mounts themselves. Their was a redesign or updated part number, we have some aftermarket options now. F56 mounts had similar issues and revised part numbers. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-failures.html The overall change inn design for the gen 3 MINI.

Are you under warranty?

Negative. 2019 with 24k miles and no extended warranty.

ECSTuning 11-24-2023 07:02 AM

Ok you will need new ones.

Considering I have active electronic adaptive dampening, are the mounts quite different and will it cost me more to upgrade them to the later revision?

ECSTuning 11-27-2023 11:43 AM

You just have to get the ones for EDC/DDC I believe the different between the two is the pin size, aka the tube/sleeve is M12 vs M10 for the NON EDC/DDC cars or m12 vs m14 (one of those sizes). The Pin is the what shock people call the rod size width that goes into the strut mount.

So you might be suggesting that I could get the significantly more affordable non EDC/DDC version and drill them out? ;)

You could I guess. ;)
