Let's talk short shifter...

I installed a NM engineering SS adapter. The throws are shorter, but is it my imagination or does it seem that the shift pattern has moved towards the front of the car? Is that a function of the revised pivot point?

I like the effort and the length of the throw, but maybe a slight bend of the shift lever is called for.

I installed the Tyrolsport short shifter, I love the feel of it - I don't think it moved it forward any, but It crossed my mind that it would be nice if the shift knob was further aft. I know the Alta short shifter has a slight bend in it - I'm not sure, maybe it would be possible to bend the factory shift lever?

I have the NM in my Clubman and I didn't notice that the pattern moved forward. In my car it actually made room for big cups in the drink holders ( keeps the shifter from hitting them ). :)

Don't know I have the Alta SSK.

To the op, yes it does seem that it has moved it a bit forward. I thought it was just me. Does your shifting feel more notchy as well?

richardsperry Jun 25, 2012 04:06 AM

Not notchy per se, I'd call it more defined. My E36 M3 is notchy, but more like a rifle bolt. THe Mini isn't like that. You have to understand that any % you shorten the throw, it will take that much more effort to shift. It's a direct relationship, because it's all about leverage....

Put a bend in mine, huge improvement. I have short arms and I couldn't really shift into 3rd and 5th without leaning forward in my seat before. I have a helix short shift adapter, and a shortened upper arm.

Pictures suck, but here they are -

I bet that gets hot...

Creeve Jun 25, 2012 11:08 AM

In Rochester cold is more of a problem them hot. But honestly its not too bad.

is that a bend in the stock shifter? If so, how'd you do that?

tominizer Jun 26, 2012 05:55 AM

I have the Tyrolport SSK and it's a really nice kit. Installation is fairly easy as its all under the hood. Shifts do feel slightly notchier though.

Last time I checked the 2011+ are out of luck on those.

It was a couple years ago but I'm pretty sure I just heated it with a torch and bent it.
