Anyone try this intake?

I have owned my car for a little over a year an I only just now have seen this intake.

Has anyone used it?
Any impressions?
How's it sound?
Is it a full(closed) box?

Any information would be great! Thanks!:)

Also this is the link(If the attachment doesn't work): http://www.vipcustomparts.com/minicooperparts.htm

Oh and also if you have any info about their strut brace that would be great to know as well!

Looks pretty clean when installed, I would be interested to hear some opinions as well. However, I'm sure it's just another tube with a K/N on it, like most intakes

I hear that which makes me wonder is there really that much more air getting to the turbo with a whole new intake or would it be smarter to just get a drop in K&N Filter for the stock airbox?

I'd like to know how they rate this in terms of a performance increase? Many CAI's claim between 10-17hp increase depending on the tubing that accompanies the intake, etc...

Not to sound shallow but not digging the "safety orange" color of their products.

Although their prices seem more than reasonable

unless you like and want the sound....drop in filter in the stock box is actually a really good setup imo. also, if you dont open up your scoop you will actually feel a drop in power, with it open, your intake temps are a lot lower...even then, its hard to tell if you even gained any power...you probably just stayed the same with some added sound....to me, numbers are just numbers if you dont notice a difference.

SomethingNew71 02-09-2009 11:21 AM

I do really love that noise but I just cant justify spending 300 for Altas intake just for sound. SO what you're saying is if I leave that scoop close I might actually loose power. Just because its pulling all that hot engine air? I don't really wanna open the scoop either too much debry all over my engine. Which is something I also don't want. Maybe I just shouldnt get an intake and save my money for a motorcycle.

If you are just looking for a cheaper solution to "K/N with a tube" cai I would look at DDM street intake. http://www.ddmworks.com/mini/cooper_...et_intake.html.

$300??? They are only $230 and on sale right now for 14% off that ...so they are about $200 even. A K+N DIY will cost around $100 or so at least.

Oh sorry, last time I checked it was close to 300. Still I feel like there has got to be something out there of equal value for less. I like that DDM Street Intake. Looks like it would work quite well.

On the subject of Alta though I have run into quite a few fitment problems. Brackets pushing tubes out, intercoolers being one of the most annoying things to install ever. Maybe I am just not very good at installing stuff but I am just not happy with Alta's build quality.

eR1c 02-09-2009 03:19 PM

Really, you don't like Alta's build quality? -I was thinking of picking up an Alta CAI + Intercooler as everything is on sale. I've always heard great things about their products.

DDM street intake, -how much does that run? -for $200 the Alta CAI seems like the best deal out there?

Not with the items I've bought (Alta CAI, Alta FMIC.) Its 189 for the DDM one. I feel like Alta has the potential of being very good. It just feels as though they cut corners to be the first ones with something out. Intercooler though I would DEFINITELY go with Helix's Stepped Core. As far as the intake I can't really say becuase I am in the same bought as which one I want.

ltjpunk7 02-09-2009 04:42 PM

Haha. SomethingNew71, I kind of feel you on the Alta FMIC. That f-ing thing just would not go in there. I feel like I dremeled for days and had to try to put the bumper on at least 15 times before finally squeezing it on. And even now, I only feel about 75% confident that my boost tube isn't going to blow off.

Hah yeah ultimatly I punctured my AC condenser and ended up costing myself almost 2000 dollars with the intercooler new condenser and labor to get it installed. Turns out the only condenser out there for the 07 cooper s is the OEM one that costs 600.

littlehandegan 02-09-2009 07:09 PM

They make great parts Go for it, a intake is an intake, as long as it has a decent filter. They do make great stuff

Looks sweet... But KNN filters are out dated. Get the dimensions of the filter and just replace it. True Flow makes uni filters and they flow great and filter amazing...
