let's rate aftermarket intake noise levels

after reading a lot of posts on intakes, i've come to the conclusion that "basically" they perform the same. the difference comes down to price, looks and the most important (to me)... the sound level. i'm looking for an intake and want to compare the noise levels of the main brands out there.

please give me the name of all the intakes you've heard and rate them from 1 to 5. 1 being the quietest. so... if the stock mcs intake gets a 1, then what does alta, webb, m7, promini, craven, helix, etc get?? thanks.

JCW 3. Only after 4500 RPMs

thelakeshow2k Mar 3, 2008 11:41 PM

have you heard any other intakes. how do they rate compared to the "3" you gave the jcw?

CAI NOISE

I've heard stock,Dinan,Alta and DDM (which i have) and if the Alta is a 3,i'd give the DDM a 4. My opinion.

and if the Alta is a 3,i'd give the DDM a 4.
Really? the DDM is louder? I haven't heard the DDM, but was always under the impression Alta was as loud as it gets.

Ummmm....I have had several intakes (K&N, Alta & M7) & the current setup AGS v.3 is the loudest I've had. The supercharger whine is music to my ears.

My JCW with no flap and a 15% pulley sounds pretty loud. Then again, I've never had an Alta.

As many different answers as there are responses.

The reason for increased noise for the generic CAIs, is when you cut away the rear partition into the back. I was always under the impression that the Alta was the loudest among the generic CAIs, but I think they're all pretty loud. I have the Helix and it totally overpowered the stock exhaust. With aftermarket exhaust, it's in perfect harmony.

so what do you rate the noise level of the helix?

simplekid15 Mar 4, 2008 11:24 AM

I think My ALTA with hose and 17% is very loud at 6000 RPM  With windows down.
Its almost like piercing.

i was asking to rate based on how loud it is... not how much you like it

one mans 3 is another mans 4

you will learn nothing

I have the feeling you're going to keep getting different answers...as with me, I have an Alta. It is very loud. I even had a stranger tell me at a gas station that while he was driving beside me in traffic, my supercharger whine covered up the sound of his car's exhaust. he had some sort of decked out WRX. So I guess you can rate that story as a 4.5?

herbie hind Mar 4, 2008 03:08 PM

try hai ; not as expensive as the m7 air gain but almost as loud . sounds like a giant vacuum cleaner coming .

CHILE_RED Mar 4, 2008 04:06 PM

AGS V.3 ......10 in my book, it isnt like any other intake I have heard it just makes you wanna go faster!!!!!

thelakeshow2k Mar 4, 2008 04:58 PM

i have a convertible and am trying to find an intake a little louder than stock.... if stock is 1 then i'm looking for a 3. i heard alta is like a 5. how loud does the m7, craven or webb rate?

the platform Mar 4, 2008 04:58 PM

I cast my vote as alta rating at an unequivocal 4.1789987565 out of a possible 5.
.......without reservations.
....sort of.

Fatherdeth Mar 4, 2008 07:24 PM

I have the Ultrik, and with the rear partition gone, I'd give it a solid 4. It's just like the Alta, just cheaper.

JAGFIXER Mar 4, 2008 07:43 PM

I have the K & N intake, but rear portion removed so it is pretty loud. Sounds like the racecars in LMP2 class. MUSIC!!

verveAbsolut Mar 4, 2008 09:40 PM

Isn't this thread completely pointless unless the same individual is reviewing all noise volumes for intakes, or an objective measure of noise (in decibels) is taken from a certain measurement point?

Nothing in life is pointless...............except maybe driving a Scion !!! :)

i think this would work better if we could give a noise rating of at least 2 intakes we've personally heard (for comparison sake).

All the ones you list will be nearly as loud as, if not AS loud as, the Alta. A good "in between" choice is the Dinan or JCW. I've run both. Dinan's a bit louder and, if you have the throttle whistle, you'll hear it more with the Dinan (especially in a cabrio).

Yep... now if everyone had a sound pressure meter, and took readings from the dash at various gears, RPMs and speeds... with the windows closed...that would mean something...
