SA texted me saying that the Exhaust Tip would not fit and stuck out to far "looks like poo", so guess it's time to price an Exhaust Sysem and keep the Tip for install later, or send Tip back and not worry about it 'til I actually need to replace the Exhaust System.

with a muf delete it really changes things a bit. Jpan is another area that seems to be pushing the mini to new levels, ported heads remapping the motor ect. would love to have a ported head but i have to find a core first.......

A couple questions for jexcc7:

Is that a full exhaust (headers back) or cat back?
Any drone at highway speed?
Cost minus labor?
Can you post a pic from a lower angle of the tip and muffler?

Within the next year my debate will be a full exhaust vs a catback + Koni yellows. I found that small pile of cash I was looking for.

Now the real research begins!

Sorry the car is so dirty!

Oh, and I took video of the Official B-Spec Muffler Delete System at the Grand Am race a couple weekends ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't get back-to-back with stock, but it will give you an idea. Should have that posted in the next couple days.

We're in the early discussion/design phase... trying to figure out what people would want as far as material/width/etc, and then look into production possibilities. See pictures/discussion HERE. Any input is great!

I'll try to remember to post the video tonight. I was waiting for the manufacturer to approve it, and get the cost info together, but I can always re-upload a modified version of the video later, if necessary.

Hey sorry, I've been away for awhile. I had this done at just a local muffler shop. 60$-"ish". Ill work on getting some more sound clips with flybys and with the camera on the ground tonight.

Here it is, the Official B-Spec MINI race car exhaust system. Originally, this was optional on B-Spec MINIs, but it's now required, so this is the same exhaust that will be on the Grand Am and Pirelli World Challenge MINIs.

Unfortunately, I'm waiting on more info regarding cost and such, but let me know what you think, everybody.

It's certainly not as loud as the 'muffler delete' description might make you think, but it's clearly more aggressive than stock. However, it does so without being really raspy, which is great, IMO.

Albiecrazy 05-11-2012 10:56 AM

That's sounding pretty good to me. Wish I could get that pop & burble, too.

Can't wait to hear about pricing - this really deletes the muffler? Not too loud considering...

Any progress on purchasing B-Spec components one at a time or portions of the total required package that is offered by the Mini dealer involved so those that might be future racers can slowly upgrade their MC while learning the in's and out's of racing?

Yeah, there is literally no longer any muffler, and it is surprising that it isn't louder than it is. It's definitely more burble-y than raspy, which is good. I wouldn't be surprised if someone could tune for a burble, but who knows. Hopefully I'll be able to get pricing soon!

BlackIce... Last I talked to Brad Davis, buying parts piecemeal is fine. Here's a link where I talk about it:

http://turn17.com/?p=351

The most specific excerpt:

-Anyone who wants to race in the B-Spec series has to buy the parts through MINI of Charleston. That being said, the prices are below retail AND I’ve confirmed with Brad that they don’t have to all be purchased at once. There IS an extra discount for purchasing the whole kit at once, but if you want a few B-Spec parts for your MINI between now and your first race entry (for instance, the Vorshlag camber plates I just ordered from them!), *you just have to show that you bought all the parts through MINI of Charleston when that time comes.

Albiecrazy 05-11-2012 02:46 PM

Nice write-up on the B-Spec MINI's first race. Are you saying that the MINI is race ready for 6K and that Ford Fiesta is race ready for 100 - 125K and the MINI finished ahead?? That's something to talk about.

Very cool that a straight Cooper is in a racing series - Grand Am, no less.

So it sounds like for 6K you're getting a lot. I can't wait to see the breakdown of all the parts - to flash the ECU and get a full exhaust would be righteous to say the least. There's nothing better than being underestimated.

I couldn't help but notice that my tow hook is in the same place as the B-spec. I don't think I've ever seen a tow hook installed in the rear - which is why I put mine there.

Me thinks we need another thread for this, Blainestang. :)

Thanks! The MINI, Fiesta, and Fit should cost about the same amount to turn into a race car. The Focus that is offered from Ford for the Grand Am series above this one (Continental Tire Street Touring) is in the $100-125k range. Did I say something about that in the article?

I've got the full parts list. I can email it to you if you want. I haven't posted it on my site because I didn't know for sure if it was supposed to be public or not, but I'll check.

If you put the B-Spec suspension, camber plates, brake pads/lines, and wheels/tires, you will absolutely surprise some people at a track day. The Mustangs, M5, and others that I passed at a recent track day I'm sure were surprised they had to point-by a 118hp MINI, and I just have the camber plates and good street tires.

I believe they've got them on both the front and back. Never know which end the tow truck can get to :D

..I watched that video...pretty cool! ...118hp...lol:lol: was thinking the same thing. ..that long sweeping course not even really ideal for a MINI.

saw the other video, of the "parade lap" ...on the straights those MCS were catching right back with you (of course) ..but on the turns...man you were just pullin' away like crazy!

Yeah, it's not perfect for a MINI, but better than Sebring where there are lots of long straights. At least at Roebling there's only one or two.

Well, it's hard to tell on the parade lap video because there's an F250 in front of me. So if I leave enough room to take a turn fast, I have to slow down so I don't rear-end the parade leader :)

Yep - I think so. I prolly read too fast and didn't see that you were talking about the ST series...

I'd really like to see that list. I'll PM you my e-mail.

BlackIce 05-12-2012 08:40 AM

Thanks. The little research I've done yielded these components:

Suspension: KW V1 Coilover Struts and Shocks/ Vorshlag front camber plates.

Brakes: Standard MINI Brake system with Carbotech Brake Pads and Way Motorworks Stainless Steel Braided hoses.

Safety Equipment: Kirk Racing Roll Cage with Kirkey Intermediate Road Racing Seat and Schroth Hybrid III Harnesses, Cage Nets and Window Net.

Wheel / Tire: 15 x 7 Kosei K1 aluminum alloy / Hoosier SM6 205-50-15

Don't know if that is still valid or what if anything else can be modified??? I read something about a 30% restricter plate for the Mini as well(?).

Seems odd you'd have to purchase from one source and only specific brands of parts, seats, rims, etc...

Is this all starting ONLY with a complete BASE MODEL with no sport package or add-ons?

Also, how does your B-Spec muffler delete fit into the parts pie? I must say I am puzzled... Should be a detailed spec sheet somewhere.

Oh, yeah, I see where I said that. Right, I was talking about the ST series car explaining how much cheaper this series is that that one. Should have been more clear!

Shoot me a PM and I'll send you the list... or just check out the price-less one below.

There's not really a "spec sheet" anywhere. Here's the closest thing to a Spec Sheet I've seen and I get all the B-Spec emails straight from Brad Davis, the guy who is behind the MINI B-Spec setup.

This is the latest "Parts/Price Sheet" from them, just without prices. I need to ask Brad before I start posting the prices and such just in case.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41540337@N07/7185781368/http://www.flickr.com/photos/41540337@N07/7185781368/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/41540337@N07/, on Flickr

A few notes:

-There are a few optional items not shown on this pic of the list: Bolt-in Cage, removable steering wheel, tires, and the Muffler Delete Kit.

-The Muffler Bypass (first item) is no longer legal, for Grand Am, at least. The Muffler Delete kit has now been made mandatory... the kit designed by Bruce Hollander of Fast Toys, Inc., whose car is in the video I posted previously.

-The Shocks and Springs are custom KW V1s developed with KW and Brad Davis/MINI of Charleston. The camber plates are Vorshlag. The Brakes are stock with WMW SS lines and Carbotech pads.

-The ECU Flash that was mentioned in previous lists was removed. It didn't make any noticeable difference on the track and cost $1000+

-The Wheels aren't REQUIRED to be Kosei K1's... as long as your wheels are the same size and aren't lighter than 13lb. There's been some difficulty getting K1s due to the tsunami in Japan.

-When you run Grand AM, you're required to buy the spec Continental Tires from Continental.

-The race seat is not included or specified. MINI of Charleston decided it was better to let the drivers pick a seat they liked/preferred.

-The restrictor plate takes the stock 60mm opening down to 33mm. A 60mm opening is ~3.5 times the cross-sectional area of a 33mm opening.

-The restrictor plate for Grand Am races is supplied by Grand Am on Saturday morning before the first practice, and must be returned to Grand Am after the race on Sunday.

Regarding your other questions, BlackIce:

-The only other modifications that can be made to the car other than the above is taking out weight. Basically, you strip out the entire car except the dash and it can weigh ~2600lb with driver, no less.

-Some things aren't required to be identical amongst all the cars: Wheels and seats, for instance, but most of the mods are the same and must be purchased through MINI of Charleston. They are not marking these parts up. In fact, most are below retail. They just want to get people into the series. There may be some more leeway when it comes to parts if you're doing something other than Grand-Am.

-The guys who have BRAND NEW cars for this series (MINI of Charleston, Pioneer Racing) I'm sure bought cars with ZERO options, but other people have cars that came with some options. For instance, Bruce Hollander's car (above), originally even had a sunroof. But, most options, even sport package options, will be removed when the car is modified for this series, suspension and wheels, for instance. There are a couple questions I would have, however. For instance, my car has DTC, which can't be completely turned off, and means I have an electronic limited slip differential that some of the other cars might not have. I will ask if that is an issue. I'm not sure this question has ever come up. Also, my car ('09 Sport Package) came with a different rear spoiler than the BASE car does. I don't know if that's an issue, but I will ask also. Obviously, the spoiler would be a much easier fix than the DTC.

Good questions, BlackIce. Hopefully my answers helped clarify somewhat and didn't just make more questions :D

BlackIce 05-13-2012 07:45 AM

Yes. Thank you for posting more detail. It sounds like the nitty-gritty will be worked out over time. I'm a long way off from Grand-am and my current MC is an automatic. Another question would be about using an automatic and if it can be modified to something like the Mini rally cars use? Also, any gearing or clutch restictions?

I understand them resticting tire brand, size and rim weight to level the playing field. Is there a reason they went with 15", over 16" or 17"?

I think the JCW grille only worked on '07-'10 MINIs. There's a thread on it somewhere (maybe even earlier in this thread?).

That almost looks like an S grille - I kinda chalked it up to him being from Turkey. Europe seems to get better options earlier than us.
