Oh I am so glad that I finally found this. I didn't know what that black square box is called so I had to use different search terms and go through tons of threads. :sly:
If the silencer does nothing more than sound-dampening, then I want to remove the whole things. I thought it was there as a pre-filter filter to remove water and other debris so that they don't even enter the intake box. If that is not the case, I will run a straight pipe from the intake duct to the intake inlet (?). |
Thank you, Ive! You definitely pointed me in the right direction.

Just checked the duct tape that I used about a year ago to block the holes inside the intake silencer. The front edge of the tape over the first hole was flapping down in the air stream. I removed it of course. Now to decide if sticky back aluminum would work longer. Anyone check theirs lately?
|
Yep, I checked my aluminum tape about a month ago, still stuck down hard, so it has been about a year and 20k miles in place.

Thanks, Tuscon!

If you are going to redo it, remove the box and wash it thoroughly, and if you are a bachelor like me just knock the major stuff off with a grease cutter and put in in the dishwasher for a scrub cycle by itself. You will get a clean bond with that aircraft style or muffler repair style metal tape with its epoxy type glue.

I did this a few weekends back. I rinsed the intake, swabbed a blue towel or two through to remove any dust/dirt and dry it off, then used the silver sticky aluminum tape. It's a little tricky to get *just right* but not impossible. I smoothed it out with a large Philips head screwdriver wrapped in a piece of blue roll.
Worked perfectly, sounds great. Throttle response even improved a noticeable amount. I like this change a lot. Thanks for the info, guys. |

Hi all!
Me and some guys in Germany modified the Intake Silencer . Now I saw at realoem that american MINIs have the same "thing" installed. What we did ... we modified the part #12. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...00/realoem.JPG 1. Remove the silencer. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...4x768_0001.jpg 2. Look inside and you will see these holes on the top of the silencer. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...4x768_0002.jpg 3. Take some tape and close the holes with it. I used a srewdriver to fix the tape because there was no chance to get in with my hands. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...4x768_0003.jpg 4. After mounting the tape it looks like this. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...4x768_0005.jpg After that re-install the silencer and have fun. Between 2000rpm and 5000rpm it sounds really great! I replaced that box the other day. I had some extra parts from a previous air system. I am sure that one could go to Home Depot and pick up the right size pvc or abs pipe and do it. Pretty much one 90° elbow and some straight pieces. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...77ad063ade.jpg

I also drop a K&N filter in the oem box.
|
How did you seal the piping to the air filter box?
|
I cut off the inlet from oem plastic piece for the airbox and cut off the outlet of the silencer box, couple hose clamps and rubber hoses. I am actually thinking that pvc or black abs pipe would insulate the air going in rather than hot metal pipe better.
