Honda VTEC(type R)powered GO MINIs...

...Anybody here own one? Do they garner the same respect as an OEM car, or are they considered a ba$tard red-headed step-child?

I would personally pay good money to drive one of these crotch rockets. Randy Webb said he had to check his pants when he was done driving one. That is my kind of Mini.

CooperSdriver 09-09-2004 12:32 AM

I have been interested in one for awhile already. In this monthes "Sport Compact Car Magazine" they have a very nice VTEC Mini. They claim the
0-60 was 4.8 seconds. So now I really want one.

Skin_Mechanic 09-09-2004 06:41 AM

This would be my current dream drive...

http://www.minimarcos.org.uk/altpics/domino/prem1.jpeg

http://www.minimarcos.org.uk/altpics/domino/prem2.jpeg

...a fiberglass-bodied Domino Premier with the 240bhp Integra engine. The car weighs just over a 1000lbs. The power-to-weight ratio would kick major a$$. I'm a sucker for hair-raising speed, the pucker factor would be a 12+

Agro 09-09-2004 12:05 PM

What size wheels are on that GoMini car? They look HUGE! Of course, they are probably only about 13 or 14 inches.

I'd happily take one of the VTEC Minis. If I won the cash for it or something. Maybe I should start playing Megabucks?

jbing 09-09-2004 12:43 PM

Most of the heavily modded Mini's are running 13's. 13's look huge compared to the stock 10"ers. Boy Howdy what a fun ride it would be.

CooperSdriver 09-09-2004 12:56 PM

13s are the way to go on that set up to hook up properly. My friend has a completely restored classic with 13s and I'll tell you the car is amazing. 1500cc engine and that is fast, so I can imagine one of these VTEC Minis.

kapps 09-09-2004 02:28 PM

I'd love to have a VTEC Mini. That would just be one amazing car to drive. Too bad the pocket book can't afford it and I'm not sure I'd consider it a daily driver  . It's like a replica Cobra, except the replica has 3x more power and is more expensive than the original. On that note, I'd love to have a Mk2 or Mk3 Cooper S as well.

Greatbear 09-09-2004 03:19 PM

If it makes the car a thrill ride, then I am all for it!

Skin_Mechanic 09-09-2004 07:50 PM

IIRC, the wheels are 14", I'm the kinda guy that would flare the hell outta the fenders and slap on a set of 16"ers, just for S&G  Prices start at 19k which is a helluva lot less than what I would pay for an SCed Pontiac Solstice(240bhp). I'm a hardcore Poncho fan, but the Vtec Mini could make me rethink my loyalties    I would be willin' to sink 25k-28k into a built-to-order V-Mini. They currently have this Zeemaxed Vtec Clubman(w/trailer)for sale on their website, but they don't list a price...

http://gomini.com/images/mini181103/DCP00235.JPG

...I must admit I prefer the Clubman grill, looks like a Mini-shoebox muscle car, kinda like' "I'm cute, but scratch me behind my ears and you'll draw back a bloody stump."

Agro 09-09-2004 09:55 PM

My wife told me that if we get a classic Mini, it MUST be a round-nose. No clubman allowed. I had both kinds, and I think the round-nose looks "more classic".

If I were gonna do the Vtec, I'd probably go with the clubman nose, just for the extra hood clearence. IIRC, Gomini mentioned the rad being a tight fit with the classic nose.

Rick-Anderson 09-10-2004 06:53 PM

I have seen several V-Tec Minis and love them. Just watch whom you are dealing with. A search and/or post on Mini Mania's forum for personal experiences with dealers would be worth the effort.

Thanks for the heads up on that. If I go the Vtec route I'll be doin' plenty of legwork before I make a purchase. I don't impulse buy anything, but chocolate

dhayashi 11-12-2004 09:04 AM

anyone know of a local shop in southern california offering a drop in kit?

MINI-MadMan 11-13-2004 03:28 AM

Well.....if I had something like that little GoMini beast, I really wouldn't care if diehard Mini fans or anyone else respected me or the car or not. I'd be a Corvette-Killer again. Had a friend who had a 425hp Civic. That thing scared the crap outta me. Totally nuts. I'm guessing that Mini would be the same kinda experience. I'd be on board to getting one if the bank account would say it's ok.
Cheers,

Steve Alexander from Orange County is developing a drop-in kit that will not require any modifications to the round-nose body. As it stands 99% of the V-Tec conversions require extending the nose by 100mm. His conversion is extremely well developed and he intends to make it as economical as possible.

Rick-Anderson 11-13-2004 04:11 AM

Here is a thread regarding the above: http://www.minimania.com/web/threadi.../msgthread.cfm

minifinn 11-14-2004 07:44 AM

Does anyone know how much the do-it -yourself subframe kit from Go-Mini costs? I'm thinking this would be a killer D-mod SCCA solo2 car. Stripped down Mini shells or "restorable" cars can be had pretty cheap. If you were looking into a track-only car, you could do this on the cheap and possibly pick up FTD if no A-mod machines showed up.

I was thinking of a Locost "Lotus" 7 D-mod contraption. But this is a way cool approach.

vm 10-05-2005 02:25 PM

What's the best place to buy one of these VTEC Minis?

JCW Driver 11-18-2005 04:38 PM

Probably MINI Tec...as I think it's the offspring of the supposedly troubled gomini company.

I don't know those details though, so whomever does, feel free to pipe up.

Latka 12-18-2005 12:01 AM

Minimania sells the "ULTRIK" frame for $1800.

www.minimania.com

The Steve Alexander frame is still in development, but last I heard it got pushed back a while.

bigstick247 01-25-2006 07:30 PM

if you whant a fast mini i have seen a classic mini with hayabusa in it it had 173 hp and did o to 60 in 2.8 secs and top speed 153 but then it is just not a mini with out the mini motor ....but thare is a shop hear in Wi that wants to put a 1.6 VTEC in my mini but i would like it keep my mini original with some mini go fast parts of corse but that is my opinion but it would be fun to have a mini that does 0 to 60 it 2.8 secs

Latka 01-26-2006 07:40 AM

Yeah, it had a hayabusa engine, but I'll bet you $100 that it also had a huge metal firewall taking up the rear half of the interior! Any bike engined cars I've seen have been pretty crude machines that were almost always purpose-built track cars.

I'm going to go with the Brian Campbell frame (Ultrik through Minimania). As nice as Steve Alexander's frame is... it's vapor ware still. :(

Agro 01-26-2006 08:27 AM

If all you want is a scarey fast Mini, I've seen a classic (road registered in New Zealand) with a 454 Chev motor sitting where the back seat used to be.
I also (somewhere) have a picture of a Mini van converted to a drag car. Also with a big block v8, but this time it was mostly under the bonnet, and it had been converted to rear wheel drive. The bug-catcher intake was in a cutout in the middle of the windscreen. Gonna have to find and scan that pic one of these days.

mcswrks 01-26-2006 08:38 AM

Holy crap! I always joke around with my friends since the cooper is so slow, that i plan to drop either a 454 or a 514 in the car, jokingly of course. But since this is real, it out to be interesting.

Cooper_Si 01-26-2006 09:33 AM

Take a look at these then guys. Taken from Himley Hall show (UK) last year, infact its on again this sunday coming, will try and get some more info on whats used for you peeps :D

Anyways...the white Mini i believe has an R1 bike engine, and the yellow Mini has a Vauxhall (GM) 2.0 16v with carbs ...wooooow

ZCars is now producing motorcycle conversion kits. I personally think that this is the ultimate. The motor is just so much lighter than the honda variants and the cars are rwd.

www.zcars.org.uk

'*Ace*' 04-06-2006 08:01 AM

It also looks like the Z'd cars also make a rear-subframe that houses a vtec engine. If you check out their site, they go through and explain what you get with it. It is a pretty trick rearsubframe with suspension parts and everything you need. The bike engine is pretty sick though...

Latka 04-06-2006 09:41 AM

I believe their Honda conversion uses the superior K series (Honda not Rover) engine. The bike engine is cool, but ... it's chain driven. The mini weighs more than a bike. I would beat the car like a red-headed stepchild... so driveshafts it is. ;)

I was told the kit is 5300 GBP. Last time I checked that works out to $9200 or so USD. Expensive, but you do get a lot in it!

I have their bike engine build DVD. Very cool. I can only imagine what a 4 banger with some torque like the K series would do.... but I gotta admit the bike engine sounds nice!

I am interested to see how your install went. It looks really clean. Did you build the subframe yourself?

Latka 04-07-2006 04:50 PM

I believe... "Sick" is the appropriate word here. ;)

Nice mini, man!

demonmini 04-08-2006 02:14 PM

thank you thank you !!! umm i actually bought the car from a guy in SC .. he had it imported and then built by MiniTec.. who makes the Tube frame ... i have plans to do a B16 head ported/polished and a ITR cams for now ... then in the future a full NA build or possibly alil boost...

MiniFr34k 04-09-2006 05:18 PM

Theres folks in Australia dumping Starlet Turbo engines into these minis - scary stuff :eek2:

04SDmini 05-03-2006 10:58 AM

Is there anyone in Southern California with a Vtec Mini? I've been researching them for awhile and would love to actually SEE one in person and hear what your experiences were getting it or building it. Thanks!
