&%$@ Key Won't Turn!

This is nothing new, actually. I will put my key in the ignition and it won't turn, and so I'll jiggle the "shifter" (and it gets quotes because it's an automatic) and then I'll try again and it's fine.

Not this morning.

I jiggled the shifter (with the key in and out of the ignition), I tried starting it in every gear, I took the brake off, I turned the wheel... I'm stuck!

Anyone have this problem and have suggestions? I'm just glad I have another car that I could take this morning.

HAVE YOU TRIED NEUTRAL?

Creatrix Jun 28, 2007 09:00 AM

of course I've tried neutral. That's what I have the car in when I'm in park as it doesn't have a "Park" state anyway.

I suspect there is a "neutral" start micro-switch in the tunnel / maybe it is loose or "shot", but I would look there first. . .

Uh, you said the key wouldn't turn. . . that isn't the same as not starting. . .maybe the ignition switch is just shot

Have you used any type of lubricant (e.g. graphite lube) on the key or in the lock? If the key won't turn, maybe its a problem with the lock innards or the link between them and the shifter interlock. It's worth a try before you start spending big $ for a switch.

I know this is pretty standard procedure, but did you try to move your steering wheel back and forth a bit while you tried to turn the key? The steering column lock may just be preventing it from turning. Just offering what might be too obvious a solution.

It was the wheel lock. I had tried turning my wheel and then trying the key, but I hadn't held the wheel turned and tried the key at the same time. That did it.

And she handles well in the rain too, but man, those windshield wipers are hilarious. (Okay, so I'm easily amused.)

Thanks guys!

Glad to hear everything is fine!!!

Next suggestion was going to be sacrifice a light-bulb (and maybe some Guinness) to Lucas- The Prince of Darkness. He's always lingering about.

Had a similar problem, only the ignition switch wouldn't let go of my key. Made it tough to leave on the street. Lubrication didn't help, so a new switch went in.
