EBC RedStuff Brakes - Metallic pop

I replaced the factory brake pads with EBC RedStuff on my 17 JCW. I've developed a metallic pop or "clap" when i actuate the brakes for the first time, once in reverse and once in drive. It's been about 1000 miles since the installation of the pads. I went to Mini (thinking it was a front end issue) and they are claiming I need shims for the brake pads ( they said they put some shims on them and it went away, of course I didn't ask if I could just buy the shims from them ).

I've found no reference to shims for EBC pads. I did get the anti squeal circular pads, which I did install as part of the pad replacement. Has anyone encountered this issue themselves? The brakes work just fine, no other noise besides this. The brakes work exactly as expected.

Thanks peeps.
