Need brakes for my JCW with big brakes
Brought the car to the dealer today assuming brakes were covered. Nope! The sensor on the rear is cut and they’re saying it needs rear brakes. They want to charge like a bajillion dollars. These things are easy enough to do at home, no? This car is a lease BTW. 2017. Whats my best bet? Buy and put in new stock pads? Any different pads? I’m not planning on touching the rotors. Any DIY info on this? How does changing the sensors work? I’ve never done a brake job on a Mini. Is it correct that getting the $600 brake maintenance package isn’t the way to go? Thank you all! Wait, a sensor is bad and the dealership is saying you need new brakes because of a bad sensor? Cant you replace the sensor? Im confused
And it would help if you told us what brakes you have. If they are Brembos or Willwoods you can just pull the pin and replace the pads More detail please :) |
Yeah...well they're saying the brakes are worn as well. However I do find it odd that the rears have worn out before the fronts. The brakes are whatever the large brakes that come stock on the JCW hatch are. Does that work? :)

the JCW comes with larger front brakes but the same size rear brakes, due to the functions of the e-diff, it is rather common for the rears to run out before the fronts, in my opinion, due to heat. Anyway, the sensor that has gone "out" is probably the brake pad sensor, when the brake pads wear far enough down it wears the sensor through and breaks the electrical connection to cause the light to come on, the plug is stupid simple to replace, it sits in the groove of the brake pad and connects via a pretty standard mini connector to the body. I know you will need a special brake piston compressor because the rear caliper brakes also act as the parking brake (not that special, can be rented from Autozone or the like). If you have any specific questions feel free to ask. I installed the Brembo kit on my F56 Cooper S myself so I should be able to point you in the right direction.
P.S. I bought upgraded pads when I did the upgrade so I have a set of oem pads for the JCW if you are interested. |
You can put some EBC reds on that as they are very cost effective and will be much lower dust
