A friend of mine, who also has a garage spot in his co-op building's
garage, informed me that since he also has no access to a water
supply, the next best thing was to get a portable, battery powered
sprayer that can draw water from any bucket or can. The pressure
isn't 'earth shattering' but he is able to keep his Big Brakes clean
without much effort. Found the item on Ebay, where it was cheaper
than going to the company site and purchasing it there. The device is
called - Worx Hydroshot Portable - 20v - 320 psi. The Ebay Item number
was 232461050344 and I saved about $43 from the company price of
$120 with free shipping included. It sure seems to be a perfect solution
for the build-up of brake dust caused by the 'Brembo's', which if not for
the heavy dust build-up I'd have no problems with.

 

Sounds like a good deal.

When I visited Dubai on business a few years ago, there were mobile power wash businesses that regularly visited local stores, restaurants and businesses offering their services to clean your vehicle while you were off doing your thing. Some had 'fancy' vehicle mounted power washer systems and others had very simple gas powered pressure washers being feed by buckets of soapy water. I guess everyone around there was too busy to wash their own cars along with the fact there were almost no drive through car washes that I saw.

 

You do need to make sure that all three components are
included. The long-extended spray gun, as well as the
battery pack, and the battery 'charger'. Some of the
batteries they offer take '3 to 5 hours to charge', with more
expensive units that can do the charging in '1 hour'. I also
believe you can check out the most up to date model at
Home Depot.

 

I read some of the reviews on Amazon and decided to pass. Are you using it yet? How is it?

 

My friend has been using it for a while now and spoke
highly about it. I tried it out today and it is powerful
enough to totally clean my brake dust - build-up with
no problem. I let another guy in my garage use it and
he said, 'my wheels haven't been this clean in quite a
while!' They are going to make a ton of money with this
thing.

Now I just use Wolfgang Uber Rinseless wash and 2-3 gallons of distilled water. I can wash both my FJ AND the Countryman with 3 gallons of water and not much time.

 

Read all the testimonials which were quite positive.
Did note one mention of the power being 98 psi,
whereas my Worx is 320. Not sure, but the latest
model might have a few more psi (325). As I stated,
my charger needs 3 - 5 hours, which is no big deal
for me, but there is one offered that only takes 1 hour.

 

I started using this guys method for cleaning wheels and even used his products for awhile until i found some cheaper substitutes for them.

but when you use this method it makes cleaning wheels super easy and quick.

What are the substitutes?

 

For years I have performed a 'full' wheel cleaning to my vehicles, where I pull the wheels off during a wheel rotation and give them a complete scrub-down to remove any/all brake dust.

I have had good luck with Turtle Wax wheel cleaners, where they do a good job, but if things don't want to let go I will use Super Clean degreaser (not the wheel stuff) to get it gone. Usually that level of cleaning is only necessary on the back side of the spokes.

Remember, the coating on the wheels is a 'powder coating' finish and not the wet spray that goes on the body panels. A powder coating finish is much, much more durable and resistant to chemicals than any body paint can ever be. I have never seen any damage to my rim finish from using a strong degreaser in the 20+ years I have been using them, FWIW. You just have to be conscience of what you are using and don't let the degreaser sit for hours, it will work its magic in usually short order and the powder coating isn't 100% infallible to all chemicals.

To finish the job, I also wax my wheels with whatever 'cheap' wax I have sitting on my shelf that I usually pick up as a door prize at my local car shows ;-) I am sure the formulation of a 'wheel wax' may be longer lasting, but it only has to hold up 6 months, so most any car wax will usually do. The waxing bit makes the in between and 6 month cleanings much easier. You can generally wipe any dust off the rims with a dry cloth when waxed. You can always reapply a light coat of wax between rotations as well if the dust starts to stick a bit.

 

I use Griot's spray on car wash and a couple of plush microfiber towels, no water required.
I won a Griot's car care products kit at a MINI club raffle, My first thought was, "No Way", but I tried it and was really impressed! I buy it by the gallon now.
