Faulty TPMS?
 

I picked up my 2004 Cooper S from the dealership last weekend and noticed it riding a little rough on bumps. Since it was purchased out of state, I took it to my regular mechanic to get inspected. He noted that all four tires had worn out on the outsides and the tire pressure was 24 psi (nine pounds below the recommended standard of 33 psi on the 17's). I noted that the TPMS did not indicate low tire pressure and I suspect that the previous owner didn't notice either.

Is there any way of checking to see if the TPMS system is inoperable? In any event, I think I'm out four tires.

The TPMS works by sensing a change in tire rotation compared to the other tires. Since all your tires were about the same pressure, it would not pick this up.

Ah. I probably should have bought one with a warranty then. The inspection failed for the tires and wiper blades, but otherwise it is clean.

What tires should I get to replace them and how much should I look to spend?

Just to make sure you understand, MINIs do not have a true TPMS. They do not monitor pressure at all. No sensors attached to the wheels. The MINI simply compares rotational speed to speculate that you might have a flat tire. I have had many Flat Tire Monitor alarms, Never had a flat.

Mini's due have TPMS Tire Pressure Mointioring System.

It is a indirect system that measures wheel speed to determine if you have a tire that is low.

TPMS uses the same wheel speed sensors as your ABS system .If you want to check the TPMS just go to a safe place and hit your brake hard. If the ABS works, so does the TPMS
