Worries about rubbing with 215/45/17's?
This is on a stock '05 MCS. Should I be worried that the 215's will rub with this set up? Again I ordered Rota Grids 17" x 7.5", +45 offset wheels with 215/45/17 Yokohama ES100's
The guys at RSpeed (ordered from them) said I should have no rubbing issues. But after reading some threads here I am second guessing the 215 width  Thanks! |
I have Proxes FZ4 in 215/45 on my S-lites, no rubbing at all and rides nice, not sure about with the +45 offset though
|
From what I've read, the 17" x 7" wheels use a 42mm offset and the 17" x 7.5" use 45mm.After reading more of the "Show me your wheels" thread it seems the size I selected is OK.

Did you lower the car? If so it will rub.
I have used the M7 springs with 205/45/17 with no problem, but after I changed to AVS100 215/45/17 with ASA AR1 42 offset I can hear the rubbing noise coming from the back. I trimed the plastic wheel wall off and no problem ever since. |
I am running 42m offset 17x8 with M7 springs and it rubs pretty bad. But I think it is due to the width and offset of the wheel more than the tires. BTW, the ride quality is awesome.
|
Yes, you're running 17x8 that's why. For me 17x7 with M7 springs before the trim is not that bad...almost no rubbing. They only rub over bumps.

I'm completely stock now. I may change the order to 205/45 just to be safe. I don't want to blow a hole through my wheel wells during the Dragon.

Yoko ES100 may rub because the edge is more square than the AVS sport. You might want to try a more rounded edge tire like the AVS sport, although a bit pricey. Another good choice would be the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 which is less money and a better tire in the wet. I did not had any rubbing problems when I went to Laguna Seca for a track day. If there is any rubbing it would be very very little with the AVS sport or Eagle. Hope this helps... |
You should be fine based on what I've seen on the board. I just ordered a set of 17x7.5 +42 offset with 215/45/17.
|
you should have no problem i am running 215/45/17 goodyear f1 on s-lites i have driven the car relatively spirited since i had them put on without no tire rub at all and i do have h-sport springs on my S ....you should be ok...

You should trust the guys at Rspeed. You're fine. The stock MCS can use without problems any 17x7 or 17x7.5" rim with wheel offset from +37mm to +50mm and tires up to about 25" outer tire diameter. Even those with a square shoulder like the Yokohama AVS ES100. Adding a rear swaybar doesn't affect any wheel or tire combo. The minute you drop your MINI using lowering springs or coil overs you decrease clearance and have to watch out for: Rim width such as 8" or wider Large diameter tires of stock size or greater than 24.6" Wide tires of 225mm (usually the limit on width without trimming) Wheel offset (usually look for +42mm to +48mm for 17" rims) |
Kosei K1, 17x7.5 with avs100 215/45/17 and lowered with H-Sports. I have had to trim back both plastic and metal in the rear wells and a bit of the flair's inner lip on the fronts because of rubbing, and I can still rub.
All Minis are NOT the same, so it's a roll of the dice when going wider. I think if I put another .3 degree of neg camber in the rear, I'll be OK. |

All Minis are NOT the same, so it's a roll of the dice when going wider. I think if I put another .3 degree of neg camber in the rear, I'll be OK. Before you change your rear camber to more negative just remember- More rear negative camber increases understeer, wears the inner side of the rear wheels more, and doesn't help straight line performance. Everything you adjust in suspension has an effect and cost. Take the middle road when you can. |
Don't worry just get what you want. I knew that 215 and lower springs will rub, but I get them anyway.
|
Well, one of my concerns with rubbing has to do with SCCA Solo II rules. IIRC, you cannot have a hole rubbed through your wheel well liners in Stock or STS class. Also, I may want to lower the car in the future....we'll see how things go in G Stock first.
I've got a call into RSpeed. I'll keep you posted. |
I talked to Joseph at RSpeed. He thinks the 215 may rub with stock suspension. He also thought 205 would look better on a car that isn't lowered. We changed the order to 205's.
This is why I'm glad to be dealing with a local MINI shop  |
215/45 Bridgestone RE-92's on 17x7 with ET42 - no issues at all.

The engineer in me won and I went with 16X7 Rota Grids shod with 205/50/16 Yoko ES100.
I'll whore out the set up here too  http://usera.imagecave.com/erik99/wh..._wheels003.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/erik99/wh..._wheels005.jpg |
215/45/17 here with 17x7 +37 OZ Superleggeras. Running H&R springs.
I have no rubbing issues, though I've not added rear control arms to reduce the negative camber in the rear. It is important to pay attention to both wheel width and offset. A 7.5" wheel will change the effective offset of a wheel by 6.35mm. For example: 17x7 +38 will be about the same as 17x7.5 +44 Of course, I'm ignoring the fact that the wider wheel will stretch the tire slightly, changing the shape, but as far as clearance goes, the effect is somewhat minimal. |

Maybe people should be more specific with regards to where the tire is rubbing.
I'm new to Mini's so I don't know where the trouble spot is. With other cars, the problem tends to be on the outside - in which case, the +35 would only increase the chance of problems. I have heard of mini owners rubbing various parts on the inside though so maybe that's the primary problem? ------- Yet another thing to keep in mind is spring rate and swaybar size. I'm running a large rear bar which could be controlling any rubbing tendencies my setup might have. From my own experience with the 215's on 17x7 +37, I would move close to +40 with my next set of wheels simply because I feel like I may have issues when I add positive camber back to the rear of the car. Hopefully I won't be trading one potential problem for another. I suppose the safe bet is to just run 205's on the street. That's what I'll be going back to. My primary concern is fitting 225's for the track. |
