use of spacers on 16 inch stock wheels

I have a 2018 F57S Convertible with stock 16 inch rims. I am interested in spacers to move the tire / rim out to or almost to the edge of the fender.. Does anyone have experience with using 12mm , 16mm or 20mm spacers to move the wheel and tire flush or close but not outside the body. It appears that the front would take a thinner spacer than the rear. I had looked at after market 17 inch rims and new tires but I'd rather go the less expensive route. The current tires are 205/55-16, I am aware that this tire is about 1/2 in taller than stock, however they were on the car when it was purchased last year.
