Hello all, was looking for Continental 215/40ZR17 EXTREMECONTACT DW 15481670000 to replace my stock Kumho' same size on my GP2 and can't find them.

They stop making that size?

Not much choice in the 40 size, may have to go with yhe Kumho' again.

What are other GP2 owners running?

Continental ExtremeContact DW is being replaced and phased out. Not much left. Not really replaced with compatible 215/40-17 size tire.

215/40-17 is very low profile and not a common size but it will fit 17x7" rims. Ride comfort may vary with construction and design of the exact tire.

Extreme Summer tires- several come in this size mostly for racing and autocross, they offer great dry grip but are usually loud, firm riding and fast wearing. Not for cold weather and some are not good in wet. Treadwear 200

Falken Azenis RT615K

Max Summer tires- Good dry grip and longer wearing than Extreme tire, treadwear 280, not as smooth riding as all season tire.
Pirelli P Zero Nero GT

Ultra High Performance Summer tires- not as good grip but fine for street use, longer tread life- treadwear 300-400 range. Some offer more comfort and lower noise.

Since you are fitting these tires on a GP2 you would want the best handling and performance possible. In that case there is a far difference between Ultra High Performance and Extreme Summer tires.

Extreme Summer tires are up to the task of performance driving but will give up comfort and be louder for daily street use. If your primary use is spirited driving and you don't have to do a daily commute on bad roads then Extreme Summer tires would work.

However if you do have to daily drive on marginal roads but still like to drive on the track then you have options for Max Summer tires or Ultra High Performance All Season tires like Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Both have ride comfort and less noise for commuting but still offer good grip in dry or wet. Pilot Sport A/S 3+ gives longer wear and is OK with cold or light snow.

 

Why not just go with 215/45 tires instead? So much more selection. Like minihume said, it all comes down to what you primarily want out of the tire (performance with comfort vs. maximum performance)

 

Thanks, i received an email from Continental confirming they are no longer making them.

Unfortunately, the tire referenced has been discontinued and we do not currently manufacture another tire within our brand in this size.

I like the feel of the stock Kumaho v700, they also make a ultra high perf. ECSTA PS31.

Another option is yokohama ADVAN NEOVA® AD08R.

 

What kind of driving are you trying to do? Any street use? Daily driving. Only track?

GP is a performance/track MINI version. Kumho V700 are track tires treadwear 50 and cost $194 each in limited supply. Max Summer tires are treadwear 300 so expect the V700 to wear out 6+ times faster if used on the street.

At the other end of the spectrum are Kumho Ecsta PS31 treadwear 400 and meant for street use, not for track, $108 each.

Just because a tire comes in a certain size does not make it equivalent in any way, depends on use. If you wanted a street tire there are much better choices in Max Summer tire class and 215/45-17 or 205/45-17 are also OK sizes.

Yokohama Advan AD08R is a new Extreme Summer tire treadwear 200, built for track use but can be run on the street. $215 each, not yet at tirerack.com. Expect it to be firm riding and noisy for street use.

 

The GP came with the Kumho' (noisy and harsh street ride but, very sticky) and I only do street driving, haven't yet gotten to the track.
The Kumho are almost eol at a little over 11K miles.
Not concerned with tread wear and I live in Central Texas, weather not an issue.

I like the look of the 215/40' on stock 7.5" rims
215/40 (SW 8.6", TW 7.9", Dia 23.7").
Not sure what the specs would be for the following on a 7.5" rim (specs listed are for a 7"), I am concerned about wheel lip exposure for the 205/215/45 on 7.5" rims.
205/45 (SW 8.2", TW 7.7", Dia 24.1")
215/45 (SW 8.5", TW 7.7", Dia 24.5").

They do offer 225/45 spec on a 7.5" rim (height might be an issue.
