although we have just seen memorial day pass, I am planning ahead a bit...

looking for advice:

My wife's '06 MCS, with 17 inch wheels and runflats will see her first winter here in NE PA and they can be rough...

Should I:

1) use those wheels (17) and mount new snows?
2) buy some used wheels (16 or 15) and mount new snows?
(I expect the TPS gauge will not respond, right?)
3) or just garage it for the winter...lol...not an option!

Im going to keep it simple and order these for 500 bucks from tire rack:

195/60R15 Pirelli Winter Carving Blackwall

It should get the job done

 

Go get some nice wheels and make those the summer wheels and use the stockers as the winter wheels. But if you decide to use the stockers as the summer wheels don't go below 16 in as the brakes are to big on the MCS. And I am pretty sure that you can get TPMS mounted to most aftermarket wheels and tires.

I was worried about dropping down to 15's, but I had a good deal on them, so according to your post I won't be doing that...

Is there any difference in the "grip" on snow or ice that a certain wheel size does better than other sizes?
Do 17's grab better than 16's? or vice-versa?

P.S. I want to use snowtires (NOT runflats) and will just keep fingers crossed for no flats!

A 15" narrow snow tire is going to work better in the snow than a wide 17" one. It is also going to ride better than a 17" one too. As long as you do not have JCW big brakes the 15's will fit your 2006.

I use a 15" wheel with a 185-65-15 winter tire. They have worked very well for me.
