215/50/16's rubbation?
 

I can't find this question specifically addressed in the forums, so here goes:
I have a 2006 Mini Cooper S w/factory 16" wheels. My runflats are finally burnt out and I'd like to switch to non-rf's in a larger width. I'd like to go 215/50/16's on my stock wheels (ET48). Any known problems with rubbing on the inner suspension with that size? If so, would a 5mm spacer do the trick? (I know about the 205/50/16 alternative, and although acceleration might be slightly improved, I think I'd puke to see any added wheel gap because of the slightly smaler ouside diameter) Thanks -Clay

Clay, not sure if this helps you or not, but I am running 215/40/16 on Rota Slipstreams with no problems.

I ran 215/50/16 Avon's, very square shoulders so more prone to rubbing, on a 42 offset rim and there was no inside rubbing. There was a tiny bit on the outside, rear only, but if you used a 5 mm spacer, with the stock wheel, on the rear it should not rub.

Actually it would be perfect as that would give you an effective offset of 43. If my wheels would have been 43 in stead of 42 they most likely would not have rubbed even with the lowering.

It might not rub without the spacer as my car has the JCW suspension and is about 3/4 of an inch lower than stock.

shouldnt be a problem. ive seen 225/50R16s on your gen needing only a little bit of spacer. Ive run 215/50 for the daily commute and 225/50 for autox on an R56 with no issues. all with a stock offset wheel.

I'm on my second set of 215/50/16s on oem wheels. I love them and have no rubbing.

I'm running 225/45/R17's with no issues at all!
it also depends on the brand though. I have seen identical numbered tires that were as much as 1/2 inch different in widths. You may want to check the "true" dimensions on the tires you are thinking of getting to make certain the size will work.
