12v tire inflation kit recommendations
 

I have not found a thread that asks what type of 12V tire inflation kits or individual components people are storing in their MINIs when they have ditched the run-flats.

I could put one together with a compressor, Slime, pliers, "T" handle and plugs, and ????, but the thought of a nice package that stows well in the MINI would be considered.

The run-flats go this summer and I want to be ready for my new tires!:thumbsup:

I recently swapped out the Dunlop RFT's for Nitto Neogens. What a HUGE difference. This is what I got for that just in case emergency:

What are the dimensions (they are not listed on the Slime site)? Where are you able to store this unit?

I was just about to start a thread asking something similar. I don't want to hijack your thread, but I figured it'd be a waste to start a new thread. I'm about to buy new tires...today. I'd like the lose the RFTs and see how they feel. If I don't see any improvement in comfort, I'll go back to the RFTs. Anyway, I found this: ContiComfortKit

The description says "This product's sealant may interfere with the tire pressure monitoring sensors on vehicles with direct TPMS, possibly leading to error prompts and incorrect pressure readings. Use of this product on direct TPMS vehicles could also result in damage to the tire pressure sensor inside the wheel. Please contact your sales specialist at Tire Rack for more information."

Any thoughts? This may be a dumb question, but is this the same system ours MINIs use?

I read that too about the conti.... I won't buy it because of that.

I went to the Slime website and they guarantee their product will NOT harm the TPMS units. That's why the above kit looks good. (same price too)

I found a ~$30 Bonaire compressor at Costco, but I would have to add the Slime and the plugs, which would bring the cost up a bit and I'm not sure how long it would take to pump the tire up from flat. It is pretty small.

So how far does the 12V plug reach???

i have the bonaire compressor from costco. works great :), but buy an extra fuse for the plug as i blew mine once.

I think I'm going to go with Slime's Safety Spair. It's about $60 and works a lot like the ContiComfortKit, only it uses Slime...which won't have an effect on our MINI's TPMS...it also comes with a "lifetime supply of sealant cartridge refills and a year of roadside assistance service." Although I'm not sure how the "lifetime supply of sealant cartridge refills" deal works, it sure sounds good. :)

As far as the kit Slime kit posted in #2 response, you can get it at Walmat for $70. That is how much I paid a couple of weeks ago.

I'm really happy with this pump. Smooth, quiet, no vibration, good capacity, long cord, screw on air hose, not expensive.

I went with the $70 Slime Spair kit from Walmart. I originally had purchased the Bonaire kit from Costco, but once I added the Slime and the DynaPlug kit it was getting close to the cost of the Slime kit. Also, the pump brings a flat tire up in 3 mins instead of 8-12 mins, the pump has a light on it, it has a battery hookup in addition to the cig plug and it is all self contained in a nice bag.

while i'm not 100% sure on the second generation, but on the 1st gen MINI, there is no sensor in the wheel or tire, it uses the ABS system and rotational speed of the wheel to determine the tire 'pressure' at no point is the actual tire pressure measured so this kit would not affect the TPMS in the MINI (1st gen at least).

To call what the MINI has a TPMS is not 100% accurate, it's a very simple version.

EDIT: So checking the other posts, i would not use this kit for the second gen MINI as the TPMS system is different then the 1st gen (what i have :) )

I was messing with my Safety Spair today. First, I have to say, it's much bigger than it looks in the pictures. It's well-built, but I was hoping it'd fit in that little cubby in the boot. (Where a lot of people on NAM are putting their compressor combination of choice.) I couldn't get the Safety Spair to fit...it's just too big. I didn't want it taking up any of my valuable space. The best thing I could come up with was to put it under my front seat. Half an inch or so sticks out over the back mat, but I seldom have anyone back there. However, I will say, if I had it to do over, I'd probably go with one of the setups that fit in that little cubby. I may buy another and sell this one on ebay or something. It'd be great if I drove an Xterra, but you know how it is with a MINI...every little inch counts. :razz: If you don't mind losing space, I see nothing wrong with this one. Anyway, that's that. I was surprised to find my local MINI dealer has the MINI mobility kit. Its a bit expensive ($149) for what you get.
