5-lug conversion availablilty?
 

hello all

what would be involved in switching my '03 MCS to a 5-bolt wheel pattern? I am assuming that I would need to source some undrilled rotors and have them custom drilled for a 5-lug pattern, but what else would be required? Or is there already such a thing available?

This would be so that I could run some wheels that are only available in 5-bolt, in case anyone is wondering.

As well, what would be the proper rim width & offset/backspacing specs for 16" and 17" gen 1 MCS rims?

its not that simple, namely, the bolts go into the wheel hub, not the brake rotors, so you need a whole new wheel hub that somehow fits the mini, which no one makes

only way currently is with a hub adapter, it is like a spacer that converts the 4x100 pattern to 5x whatever

so far the consensus is that because minis are very offset sensitive, especially with lowering, that it is not a common procedure to go down. There is a gent who did a 4x100 to 5x130 bolt pattern and put porsche turbo twists on, it brings the offset somewhere down to 30, which is a big no no for lowered cars

our only choice really is porsche offsets, anything else would stick out too much, unless you have a wide body kit to go with the wider wheels and the lower offset

what wheels do you have in mind... BMW wheels for example will never fit a mini because they typically have low offset, and with the hub adaptor adding more space between your hub and your wheels, your wheels'd completely out of the car!

The hub is drilled for 4 lugs, too - so, you'd have to either:

1. Convert from the 4-lug hub to a 5 lug pattern with a custom adapter and get some custom rotors
2. Have someone make you a custom hub (with the correct splines for the axles) with the right 5 lug pattern and get some custom rotors

It's possible - but I'd think it wouldn't be cheap. Also, you'd have to start watching offset closely. IMHO, it's not worth the effort...

thanks for the prompt responses; as you can tell, I'm just getting into the Mini thing, having bought my '03 only a few months ago. I didn't realize that Minis had the lugs in the hubs, not just the rotors, so I think converting to a 5-bolt pattern just went down the drain.

I had a fleeting interest of running some American Racing AR500's, which are basically a billet Magnum 500, to kind of pay homage to the original Mini Clubmans that came with the similarly styled ROStyles.

Oh, man, old school. I wonder how Keystone Klassics would look on a MINI. Add some air shocks and a set of blow out speakers blaring Aerosmith's Dream On and its 1978 all over again.

thanks, at least that means I'm not the only crazy one. I think that some Torq Thrusts would also look great, but again there's the 5-lug issues to deal with, and I just don't know if I trust wheel spacer/adapters enough to use them, although I'm sure if the proper set is used correctly they are fine. As well, I have the suspicion that these style of wheels may only be suitable for rwd vehicles, but who knows.

And I'll compromise and settle for Wanted Dead or Alive, but that means I'll have to find & buy an NOS black leather Parasuco rocker jacket...ebay maybe?

These wheels are pretty hot and are pretty much replicas of the old Cooper S Sport Pack rims but available 16" or 17" instead of 12" :lol::lol:

I guess I'll bring this one back to life... anyone had a chance to compare hubs from R56 and E82? the 128i has a 5 lug hub and should have gotten some of its design from the MINI platform I think. Just wondering if the hub mounting bolts would match up on centers. If so it would make converting easy and finding replacement rotors easy down the line....

I have some 5-Lug 17in 3 Piece BBS's that I'm restoring that I got from a guy here on NAM. I've not purchased these adapter yet, but he has. Below is a link to his conversion:

I've seen these conversions before but I don't like that it spaces out the wheels so much. Drilling the stock units seems to be a solution but makes doing a brake job a PITA because you have to get your new rotors drilled every time.

A full hub assembly replacement seems like a great option if another BMW uses a similar bolt pattern for the hub mounting. I realize being RWD may be a problem with the BMW swap but just trying to think out loud and see if anyone else has given this a thought or attempted it...

I assume that since you are looking for a 5-lug conversion, you will be putting larger thicker tires/rims on, would you not need to put spacers on anyway, in this case 18mm?
With the stock 4-lugs, going with a wider rim/tires, would you not also need to use a spacer?

If that were the case yes, but I'm just looking at it from a bigger wheel selection stand point. Not necessarily to go wider or lower offset. I like the tucked look so keeping the offset close to stock would be preferred but have found a better choice of wheels with 5 lug.

Whats the difficulty with swapping in later (2011/2014 later) 5 lug hubs (axles ?) "
I assume a spindle change (front and rear) may be required, is this a possibility ?
