Wheel/Tire assistance advice for a newbe
Ok, I tried searching but could not find a good place that answers my questions so I am posting to get some answers in term that (I) a non-tire expert can understand.
the MCS if you get the sport package comes with some 17" S-Lights, Preformance Run-flats. not sure the numbers 205/45/17 dont even know what they mean, I would like to. and whats an "Offset" why is it important? I dont like the feel of the run-flats an looking to go with say the RSpeed package which offers wheels ( G Racing Seki 17x7.0 (42+ offset) ) and the tires they are puttting on are ( 215 40 17VR Hankook Vintus Sport K 104 tires ) So with all that said.....
1. What do the numbers mean?
2. Whats Offset ?
3. If my wheel and or Tire's change how does that affect the computer ecu stuff?
4. How does the tire sensor deal with the new tires?
5. Advise on moving from the MCS stock run-flat 17" to what I mentioned above?
I would like to understand this, and remember I know "Zip
" about Wheels and tires.
Thanks again for the Advise.

OK
205: 205mm tire width
45: ratio of sidewall depth to tire width (eg. sidewall is 45% of 205mm)
17: diameter of the wheel onto which this tire will fit
Other things to note:
The standard MINI offset is 45mm. This is the relationship of the tire track to the hub - how far out or in the wheels track raltive to shere the wheel hub is.
The MINI bolt pattern is 4x100.
The hub bore (MINI wheels are hubcentric) is 56. When ordering wheels, be sure to get hubcentric ring adapters. The center of the wheel rests on a hub protrusion. Some wheels have larger center bores and must be adapted with plastic rings so the the new wheel seats on the MINI hub correctly.

ICQ is 100 percent correct on the tire dimentions
Offset gets tricky, as it changes on wheel width, and also accounts for brake clearances.
On tire sizing, we ususally attemp to match OE overall diameter, so that your spedometer and gear ratios remain exactly calibrated. 215/40/17 leaves you slightly short in diameter, and a bit low in load capacity.
The runflat sensors are a diameter / revolution counter, based off of your ABS sensor. It warns you when one tire overdeflects, and rotates quicker that the other tires. Think of it like the human body's negative feedback. It senses deviation from the normal, above or below. (most effectivly below)
I would utilize 205/45 or 215/45, and your move will be flawless. Enjoy the added comfort, and increased performance of non runflat performance tires.
