15x9/15x8 tire size ?

Thinking of trying my luck in STX next year at club level in my '06 JCW

Lots left to spend/build.. but I do have some 15x9 6ul's and by the spring I am hoping to find a pair of 15x8's for the rear.

Probably looking at Rival S, what is the go to tire size that fits? 225/45?

Lt. Dan 11-18-2016 06:43 PM

That's a great question that I'm actually answering for myself tomorrow. Picking up some TRM 15x9's with well worn 225 Rivals on them to test fit.

SKurj 11-18-2016 07:53 PM

I have a full set of 15x9 6ul's with 225/45 rivals, but they are done, looking for what i need to replacem and will fit the 8" wheel and make sense..

Burglar 11-20-2016 12:21 PM

I've heard completely unsubstantiated rumors that there may be a 245/15 made in one of the top tires next season.

Regardless, always good to hold off until the last possible minute- as you never know what's going to come out.

SKurj 11-20-2016 03:08 PM

will larger than a 225 even fit without rubbing? Do people usually run same size tires regardless of the difference in rim widths? New to the mini.. I normally run a BRZ in CS.

Burglar 11-21-2016 04:53 AM

Not sure, but going from a 225 to a 245 on a 9" should just change the shoulder profile. I think the only reason the 225 on the 9" fits at all is because the overall diameter is smaller than the OE size. Buys clearance.

Also, think you should run that BRZ in DS next year. ;)

SKurj 11-21-2016 05:56 AM

I had heard it was moving to DS, i will keep the mini for club stuff and the brz for the regional series :)

Oops should add is 45 series the norm or 50 preferred on the mini?

MrBlah 11-21-2016 06:06 AM

depends on what you want for gearing, I prefer the shorter sidewall. I ran 15x8 205's last season on my stx car then moved it to SMF, I was not beat in it but just local club drivers.

I'm following along as I wanna know what you all end up running on 15x8's

*wave*

I hope so, I mounted up my 15x9's with 225 Rivals, and I THINK there would be room for a 245 on there!

Just curious, the regular ET36 15x9 6UL fits? No spacer? They clear OE r56S brakes?

Haven't done a test fit of mine yet, running the snooooows atm.. but I think you need 15mm spacer to fit on the front, and 9" will not fit the rear at all..

ojannen 11-27-2016 04:15 PM

I am running 6uls 15x9 front and 15x8 rear. Rivals 225/45 all around. The rears could use a 2mm spacer for a little more clearance to the rear trailing arms. The fronts need a 15-20mm spacer to clear the brakes on my car. There is quite a bit of poke on the front so you need to be careful with suspension travel as well.

The 8" wheels fit the 225 section tires about right and the 9" wheels have a bit of stretch.

I don't think there are any 245 options on Rivals/RE-71s. I would probably switch to 245s at least in front.

MrBlah 11-27-2016 04:39 PM

no options for either of those but I can get slicks in 245/45/15 or 245/40/15

Thanks good info, what brakes are you running? Oops is this an r53 or?

ojannen 11-27-2016 07:37 PM

r53. One of the Wilwood kits. It came with the car so I don't know the exact model number. The rotor is the same size as stock but the caliper is a little bigger.

I believe stock brakes or r56 brakes fit with a smaller spacer.

I tried out 15X8 +20 with 225/50-15 tires and it had too much poke, hits fenders.

I'll probably get a Kosei in 15X8 +35 (hopefully enough rear clearance) but I'm afraid that 225/45 will lower the gear ratios too much.

This is on a R56 S. I can confirm the Koseis clear brakes just fine.

Following this thread:thumbsup:

40 profile did not lower my ratio too much, at least not till I get a bit faster.

We have 2-3 events per year I can shift into 3rd, and no amount of tire will help that

Dr. Spade 12-07-2016 05:43 AM

What size tire exactly are you talking about?

In terms of odd 15" sizes that may fit us there's the new Nankang track tire but its 180AA. There's a 195/55-15. And Going to 225/50-15 there's only Toyo R888.

Nothing 200AA unless we go down to NA/NB Miata sizes.

MrBlah 12-07-2016 06:03 AM

rival s 225/45/15 I think I'm gonna run these on my track car next, these or some nt01

For track I'd suggest the NT01. At this point I think the Rival S is actually softer and faster for autox. But NT01 should hold up better on track.

I still have some 225/45-15 NT01s on my 15X9s for the Miata. But they've been used to the bone.

MrBlah 12-07-2016 06:22 AM

nt01 will cost me about 100 $ more though, and not rain safe at all

Really? I don't see Rivals treadblocks helping to evacuate water any more than Hoosiers

Dr. Spade 12-08-2016 06:42 AM

Anyway, having run 15X8 with 205/50 Federal RSRR (borrowed from Miata) I can say I do not like how short the gear ratios end up being. This is on R56

There are no 205/55 options. There is one 225/50 option but it's R888 so not STX legal. There is a 195/55 option with Nankang but treadwear is 180AA. So still no good.

MrBlah 12-08-2016 07:24 AM

why dont you like the short ratio? my speedo is 10mph off but the ratio is great for AX/track, lots more pickup
