Fuel Guage not registering level

I own a 2003 MCS  and I have noticed more and more that when I run the car for a long period (2 hours freeway), shut the car off after that, and start it again, the fuel guage will not register. Everything else seems to work properly. I have only found this problem happen when the fuel was below 1/2. This happened to me today with 1/2 tank, so I decided to shut the car off, open the gas tank, close it and restart the car. This time the problem cleared. Now, the same problem happened. I am about 1/4 tank but the guage will not register gas.

I really don't want to have to take this to the dealer and pay serious cash to the mechanics  just to find out that I could have bought an after market warrantee and have the warantee pay for it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds Like the Fuel tank sensor under the passenger side rear seat is screwing up.

doesn't the fuel pump on the driver side give input to the cluster on fuel level?
