The widely discussed cold start rattle on this board is a gen2 (TURBO) car issue....Had to do with variation of length of the timing chain...there is a fix!!
If you have it on a gen1 car...then you need to get it looked at! It is likely something that should be fixed.....but more info, and description would be needed on a gen1 car.

I have never heard of generation1 cars having this problem, only generation 2 cars.

Does it sound like rattling chains??
Or more of a ping-ing?
Maybe the oil is just draining back to the lower end...causing a bit of rattle till oil preasure builds...do you have the guage package so you can see the oil preasure at start-up?
A cold rattle on start-up on a r53 is unusual...but it can happen...heck, just different reasons than a gen2 car.

It's not pinging, and the rattling chains seems like it would be too high pitched for what im hearing. I'd say it's a low/deep rattle. i dont have any gauges, to check but your oil pressure theory sounds good.

What are you using for oil? Oem or good filter like a Mann/mahle?
And good gas right?

Heck...sounds like maybe it just takes a few seconds for your car to wake-up in the AM. I'm surprised nobody has chimed in...but if it runs ok...I would not worry...maybe if it is under warrenty, mention it to the dealer...maybe even a compression check if you want to br crazy safe....but if it runs fine....and is not hurting anything....could be called just one of those things I guess.

Mine had that and it turned out to be the lifters had plastic tips that had deteriorated at 80k miles. The replacement cost me almost 700 parts and labor and were replaced with the new ones with metal ends. I have seen similar posting about this on other forums for the gen 1 minis.

on startup mine will taptaptaptap for right as the cars does its startup rev. then it stops. This is typically when it is cold out side.

I just bought a 06MCSa with 45,600k on it and I drove it every day, every chance I got and never heard this noise. I took it to 3 different shops to be vetted before I bought it and it checked out well. The one place turned it on and listened to it for a good 10 minutes while they also checked the body and interior. Said it was doing everything right. I take it to work , 50miles, park it in the garage for 3 days and when I started it up I heard a bit of a noise like you describe. It drove home great like it should. I really like the car, is this a Mini ism or something I should be concerned about? I will see if it does it today after not sitting. It has good gas in it and good oil in it.

Tracy
