I know everyone has been talking about the coolant color, but I have a slightly different question. I have around 2000 miles on my Cooper and the coolant level is close to minimum. I was wondering if this is normal or if I should also be concerned about a leak. It seems everyone has mentioned the MCS, but I have the MC. If it's a possible leak, then where exactly should I look for the possible source. Upon an initial check of the engine I hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary with the exception of the coolant level.

There are a few threads on the topic at hand already going. Check through them and see if anyone can match up a solution to your problem. I have an MCS with the same issue. Cannot seem to find any leaks or residue on the heat shield below. Hoses seem dry and fine, as does the tank. There was word that there may be a leak in the tank itself where the joints along the edges are.
If you're close enough to your dealer, ask there if there's been any improvements on the matter. Get her topped up as well while your there.
Cheers,

Some people have reported that coolant is leaking INTO the engine through a faulty O-ring on the water pump input shaft, so you would never see any signs of a leak. Not sure if this applies to MC though........

Just picked my MCS up from the dealer tonight. Got towed in 4 days ago. Coolant level was EMPTY... REason - "cracked seal" on the water pump.. Getting frustrated - third trip to dealer in 3 months for repairs..

Check the seam on the coolant recovery tank....
and underneath the tank for signs of a leak.
When mine first started the leak was barely visible.
