N14 Intake Valve Rocker Fell Off...
 

About a month ago, I went out to go to work and Bean was running like crap, no power, wouldn't idle. So fast forward to today when I pulled the valve cover off (preparing to do the timing chain, water pump, t-stat and HPFP) I noticed that the rear intake rocker arm for cylinder 3 was sitting in the head completely off the valve and out from under the camshaft. Does anybody have any ideas on what may have caused this? The clip that holds it onto the pivot is intact and the roller of the rocker looks fine, not out of round or flat-spotted. I will mention that the timing chain guides are intact and it doesn't appear that the timing is off but I am going to do the timing chain anyway since I'm in there.

But if anybody has any ideas as to something else I should look for please let me know. I'm used to older pushrod v8 engines so this is a bit beyond my realm of knowledge since this is the first DOHC engine I've had apart.

Worst case scenario, the valve got bent slightly and wasnt keeping full length pressure on the roller.

When i did a rookie mistake and didnt tighten the crankshaft bolt correctly, it came loose, valves bent, rockers flew off.

After you do the timing chain and reinstall the rocker, do a compression test just to make sure.

You need not take the cam to reinstall, you could use something to press it down enough to slide it over.

That’s what I thought. Im going to stick a borescope in that cylinder from both the spark plug port and the intake to see if I see anything then run compression after doing the timing.
