2008 R56 JCW won't start

Hey guys,

I have a 2008 R56 JCW. I recently did the timing chain replacement and it was running pretty good. Last Friday I used it all day. When I tried to turn it on the next day, it didn't. So far I tested the battery, fuses, relays. fuel pump is priming with no problems, and no codes at all. Any ideas/suggestions what to do next? Thanks in advance.

What happens when u press the start button? Does the starter turn?

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-02-2019 07:49 PM

No brother nothing at all.. All the lights come up and everything looks normal, but when I press the clutch and the button to crank the engine it won't do nothing.

mkov608 04-02-2019 08:20 PM

Well, let's start with the battery. How many cold cranking amps is it producing?

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-02-2019 08:49 PM

Not sure what that means.. but last time I checked the voltage was on 12.3. I tried to jump started with another vehicle but that didn't work either. Battery has an installation date of 3/17.
I did a quick video trying to start the car using both Fobs.

My English is terrible by the way. 😂😂

it seems the car is not sensing your pressing the clutch. Check the sensor on the paddle.

Also, try to press the brake, it might be looking for a second signal for some reason.

I will check that today and post the results..

Do you have a multi meter or a scanner? I'd recommend a Foxwell NT520 Pro with BMW/MINI software. You can get one at foxwellmall.com

With the scanner, you can pull up the clutch switch and then depress the pedal. The scanner will show the position of the switch as the DME (the engine computer) see it.

Ok so I tried the magnet on the switch still nothing. I only have an OBD2 reader unfortunately Indont have a scanner. I will definetly get me one cause I really love this car and it seems that I will be using it very often. Question, I recently changed my headlight bulbs to LED, y'all think that can cause errors on the ECU?

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-06-2019 10:17 AM

Ok so I ordered the Foxwell Scanner, it should be here on April 11. as soon as I scan the car let you know whats up..

mkov608 04-06-2019 04:39 PM

After you register your scanner and connect it to the car, read and decode the VIN.

Then select:
1. Drive
2. DME Digital Motor Electronics
3. Live Data
4. Foot Pedal

Then check the box for clutch switch and press OK.

You will see a screen like this.

Depress the clutch switch and it should change the value to this:

Ok so I got the scanner today, I did what u told me about the clutch switch and it seems to be good. I did a full scan and it came out that the issue might be the CAS. Already tried both keys and won't start. What should I do next??

MiniToBe 04-11-2019 05:59 PM

It could be a dead starter...did you try popping the clutch (push the car then shift to 1st or 2nd while rolling)?

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-11-2019 06:35 PM

This lil fu$%^ turned on. I think the battery is bad at the end or one of the Fob Key is going bad..

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-11-2019 06:37 PM

But im in love with this scanner. It let me erase those codes and as soon as I put the 2nd key it worked.

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-11-2019 08:25 PM

It's doing it again. The only way I can make the car run is if I jump started.

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-15-2019 09:41 PM

So To close out this post, my issue was the starter as you stated earlier on the thread MiniTobe.
Thank y'all for the help.

MiniToBe 04-16-2019 05:31 AM

Glad you got it fixed :)

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-19-2019 08:58 AM

Unfortunately wasnt the starter only. The stater was bad so good I replace it. now it seems that the CAS system is messed up. but I read on a website that if the car still communicates with the DME the CAS is still good. The only codes I have now is Terminal 50 and Terminal 50 RS which I believe means Relay switch. but the all relays are good. any other suggestion here peeps..:/

MiniToBe 04-19-2019 09:28 AM

Looking at the CAS wiring in newtis.info, terminal 50 is the white wire going to the starter. I'll have to dig deeper to see what could cause it. But, if you pop the clutch, would it still start like before? If you clear the code, it pops right back?

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 04-19-2019 09:48 AM

Exactly.. It will turn on popping the clutch. Sometimes starts normally just pressing the start/stop button. I could be a lose cable, but Which one is the question :/...

MiniToBe 04-19-2019 11:58 AM

look at pin 6 & 22

Ivan Eroy Diaz Roman 02-02-2021 11:05 AM

You were correct. it was a bad starter..
