Battery replacement for 2012 Cooper S

So yesterday went to dealer to get the big service done and told them the problem I had. My mini will not be able to start once I leave it out for 1days, I have to jump start it. It happens frequently this past month. So have the dealer to check on battery, they said my battery is dead and needs a replacement, but that also require to hook up to their software to register it. For sure they quote me with a sky high price. So I decline. Then I research a bit and people saying that if there is a little thing hook up to the negative cable, that means it has to be register the battery. But my question comes down to this when I go ahead and check it this morning. Attachment is the photo of the battery, so does that means I can just replace the battery myself and doesn’t need to use the software? Seems like there are nothing on the negative cable. Also, Someone said there is 2kind of battery for Mini, I am wondering which kind should I get? Any recommendations? |

From your photo, you don't have the IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) cable on the negative terminal of your MINI. You don't have to register your battery. |
So I can just simplay replace the battery, then which kind of battery I should get? Got any suggestion? |
Get a group 48 or H6 battery. Group 48 is the U.S designation and H6 is the European designation for the same battery.
Look for one that has more than 480 cold cranking amps, the stock MINI battery is not powerful enough for all the electrical accessories it has. I've run my battery down on a new stock battery by just listening to the radio for a half an hour. :mad: |

You misunderstand. My new oem MINI battery was not strong enough for me to sit in my car and listen to the radio,(a very small electrical load) for even a half an hour, before it was too weak to start the car. I recommend getting a battery of the same size, Group 48, but with more capacity so that the battery will not go dead as easily as the factory battery does.

Ya, my 2012 MCS does not have IBS. Last summer it died, replaced it (myself) with a NAPA group 48 battery. Fairly easy DIY, there is a how-to around her somewhere.

2009 JCW Clubman without IBS. Got an Odyssey 0752-2020 (48-720). 723 CCA. 69 Ah. Fits fine but had to trim one of the plastic terminal covers (easy peasy). |
So what was the reason some MINIs got IBS & others didn't?
I don't see the module on my '13 Justa, so I think I am exempt to the registration requirement. |
IBS is mostly tied to options related to the radio and entertainment systems. Don't know why, can only guess they are more sensitive to battery performance.

After I opened the cover, found one tiny tube that goes to the positive side of battery. I have got an interstate H6 battery from Costco. Wondering if that tube should also goes to the positive side of the battery? Because I found out the original battery doesn’t have a hole on the negative side, but the Costco one has holes on both side.

The MINI oem battery has the vent tube on the positive side of the battery, so you should put the vent tube on the side nearest the positive battery terminal.
