2011 MC S Wont Start After New Battery

All --

I have a 2011 MC S that I just purchased. Original battery was in the car, wife left the lights on and you know the rest. The car would not start so I took the battery in to have it checked / charged and they said it was fine (though the voltage was up at 15.6 volts). Tried to start again and nothing. I put a new battery in and still nothing -- the starter does not engage and the engine does not try to turn over. I just get a ticking noise. My Ancel AD310 shows P10F6 -- "Control Phase with Circuit Opened." Any thoughts? Is it possible that this is part of the electronic immobilizer system? Maybe a bad battery in the key? HELP!

Thanks!

Hello There,

You may have something else, other than battery related, going on.
FYI - Mini has a protection feature that automatically turns off headlights if left on to preserve battery. So, it highly unlikely that accidentally leaving headlight switch "on" killed the battery.

Good luck,

W

Ah, thank you for that. So yes, still stumped. I will play with it some again tonight and post an update.

Check as many ground connections as you can find. It only takes 1 corroded ground to cause problems.

+ for a bad ground! Check for the one on the passenger side of the firewall, mine for whatever reason was pretty corroded at one point.

Don't our batteries need to be programmed into the cars ecu when you swap them?

Indeed! The battery does need to be programmed on some vehicles, but not programming the battery will not keep the car from starting. Not programming the battery just (reportedly) keeps the battery from functioning optimally.

Still no love with this car. The starter does have power to it. Battery has been reset -- just in case. If I jump the leads on the starter it spins -- though does not extend and engage. Hmm...

^^^ This. If you’ve got another set of keys. The starter not engaging sounds like an anti theft device

Unfortunately, I just have the one key. Can Mini / BMW test for me and tell me if it is transmitting or not?

But it is a proximity key and the car clicks at me like it is trying to start though the starter does not engage.

I just created a thread on the CAS module. Does is make a starter engagement noise at all? If Terminal 50 is bad then it won’t start unless the CAS gets replaced. I went through the same thing after a clutch replacement and my battery died in the process. If you can run a scan to check voltage during startup on that terminal. If it reads 0 V then it may be that.
