DIY battery replacement help w IBS equip Mini's
Leave it to BMW/Mini to complicate changing a car battery.
My Mini is equipped with IBS (Intelligent battery sensor)The IBS electronics continuously measures voltage, starting currents, temperature and parasitic draw. I've read a few post regarding this procedure and still have yet to get a definitive answer if I can swap the battery without any issues with regulating these functions. Some say it won't be problem some have had issues after installing new battery. In trying hard to avoid going to the stealership! Any insight or help will be greatly appreciated! |
Stick with the same type of battery and capacity, that eliminates needing coding. However you still need to register the battery as it is the way the system knows not to apply a charge as if it was still an older battery. I think it is hit or miss on having problems or not. Our 2011 battery started to fail recently and odd things happen, so the MINI is pretty sensitive to electrical issues.
You can register it with software or some scanning devices. You might call an indy repair shop and see what they will charge you for the process which is pretty quick to do. |
Not sure what the dealer charges for it, but Minnie.the.Moocher has the info you need. You can change it but it will need to be registered. Some folks have software like Carly that they can do it with. I used my Schwaben scan tool to do it on mine. If I were you and can’t find a friend locally who has something to register it with, is call a few different Euro repair shops that specialize in BMW/MINI and I’m sure they have a way to do it that won’t cost much. My speedometer and gauges wouldn’t work until it was done. The good news is it only takes about 5 minutes to do. It’s very easy with the right equipment. |
Thank you for your help! I ordered a Odyssey battery and Schwaben scan tool since both were on sale.

What happens if you don't register the battery?

It was actually pretty funny, I told them ahead of time about it, and they looked a little skeptical. But when the mechanic drove it back out of the bay, he looked a bit ashen and nervous. “I don’t know man, but none of your gauges and stuff are working now” I was cool about it “no worries, I got this” even though I was totally nervous. A few easy button clicks later and all was well. Lol |

The Schwaben is on sale very cheaply. I had to buy one as well. I think they are coming out with an updated version at some point so maybe they are blowing out the old stock.

I have a standard battery and I tried to register putting in a new battery but it says if you don't have IBS there is nothing it can do.
|
yes no system to reset. IBS will have that cable type in the system, that another way to tell. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...427603567~oem/

I don't have that on my car.
|
then no IBS
