What gasket compound to use on supercharger rear plate

I have the supercharger off to replace the oil and I took the back cover off to see the condition of the gears. Everything looks PERFECT and it was full of oil so someone had already done the service but cheap insurance to check. Now that I have to put the back plate of the supercharger back on and there was no gasket there and a little evidence of some type of sealant. What type of gasket maker compound do I use here? I've heard anaerobic sealant, but there is normal and high temp and I'm not sure which one. I've also been told RTV is fine but I don't want to just throw RTV ultra black on there if it is the wrong thing.

Anyone have a definitive answer?

This issue is solved. I called Eaton today and asked them. They told me to NEVER use RTV under any circumstances. Only anaerobic sealant and specifically Loctite 510......$27 later and a drive across town and back and I have what I need to finish this job.

I'm going to have a lot of this stuff left over as the tube is 50ml so if anyone in Houston wants to open up their Supercharger let me know. This stuff has a shelf life and I'd rather it not be thrown out

FWIW, Hylomar was designed for just this sort of application. Should be available at any decent parts store.

While that may be true I talked directly to Eaton technical department and they told me to use Loctite 510 only so I used what they stated as I was able to find it that afternoon here in Houston, even though I had to drive across town. You reference "decent" parts store......where do those exist anymore? The only ones around here are all big chain shores and are nothing more than the Walmart of the automotive retail. They suck, they carry nothing a real mechanic wants and rarely have parts in stock for anything I drive.

Yeah, I guess I'm dating myself. Your post prompted me to do some investigation. There was a time when Hylomar was packaged by Permatex and was widely available - I used to get it at NAPA. Some people thought that the Permatex version was inferior to the real stuff, but I can't comment on that. Anyway, for a variety of reasons, those companies have parted ways and Hylomar is no longer so readily found (as always, Amazon is your friend on stuff like this, but that is not much help when you are trying to put your car back together on a Saturday afternoon). Permatex sells a product that is supposedly similar, but I have no experience with it. Most race shops will have Hylomar, since a tube of it is an essential accessory to a gear change on a Hewland box. I guess in the end, the manufacturer's recommendation is as good as anything, although if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't hesitate to use the tube I have on hand. (FWIW, I'm an automotive engineer, and used to work for Eaton, although not in the supercharger operation.)

I don't doubt your credentials Sp4rtan and if yours was the only information I had I would not hesitate to use your suggestion as I appreciate all the effort people like you add to these forums without which I would never have been able to fix up this MINI as fast as I have. I knew nothing of this kind of sealant last week, even though I've been restoring cars and building hot rods for 40 years. It was because of the confusing information I got from several MINI mod shops upon calling that prompted me to call Eaton. Less than two hours after talking to Eaton I had this stuff in my possession. Thanks for your input and information. I'm old but the only reason I know as much as I do is because I listen and I love information such as you have shared .
