Check engine light

Hello. Check Engine light is on but OBD2 reader says no codes. Searching for codes while ignition is on and engine isn't running. Is that the correct procedure? Borrowed a second scanner and got the same "DTC 00" value. Anyone ever experience this? Model: Clubman, Year: 2009, OBD2 code reader $20 Performance Tech from Pepboys (maybe this scanner is a known problem for Mini's?). Thanks.

I believe your procedure is correct. I have a bmw specific scanner and sometimes there are codes "pending" that have given me a check engine light.
I dont want to say find a better scanner, but...............
