Help troubleshoot auto sensing wipers inoperative

I have the box on my windshield. When I click it to the first position on the stock (gen1 r52), it operates the wipers just once, then they dont go on again, even in heavy rain at speed.

Does this have to be a sensor problem?! Do they ever go bad? I have an afternarket windshield but it looks like the lens etc is attached and they put the correct windshield on.

How does the cover for the sensor come off? Just pull? Maybe its just not plugged in!

Its attached to the window with a sensor. The Sensor lens itself is in the glass. If the box does not sit tight on the glass the sensor will not see the water. Same part on the gen 2 MINIs as the gen one on the box part. Windows are different. This guy has a retrofit but the OEM part numbers are the same.
