R53 issue 🤦🏻*♂️ (possible crank pulley)
 

My EML light turned on, and was not going over 10 mph. I shut the car off and turn it on again and it works fine but if i go over 5000 rpms it happens again. The car starts smoking and smells like burnt rubber. Has anyone experienced this? And have you fixed this problem? What can it be.. HELP PLEASE! Thank you.

Welcome to NAM but sorry about your problem. I am going to move this the Stock Problems/Issues Subforum/folder.

How good are you with a wrench and how many miles on your car? The crank pulley/harmonic balancer has a rubber core and depending on age and wear the rubber starts to breakdown that allows the inner part of the pulley, that is attached to the crank, spin while the outer section does not move. It could be that as you hit 5,000 RPMs the rubber starts to slip that stops the drive belt, which then stops the alternator from spinning. This will throw codes. The next thing is what codes are being shown?

If you are good with wrenches suggest you get a scan tool. Next jack the car up, take the tension off the belt and then if you can push the crank pulley in so that the pulley is hitting the engine, your pulley is shot. You can also jack the car up, chuck the rear wheels, remove the passenger side wheel, start the car and you should be able to see if the belt is moving. If you are not comfortable with turning wrenches, find a good Mini Shop.
