Check Gas Cap / Check Engine light After Clutch Job
Hello all!
I have a 2005 R52 Mini Cooper S Convertible with 65,000 miles that I recently changed the clutch on. After everything was put back together a few days after the check gas cap light came on along with the check engine light. Not sure what could be causing it. I smoke tested the lines connecting to the fuel purge valve and found no leaks. I replaced the purge valve and nothing changed. Once I reset the light it comes back on a day or two later. Any ideas of what it could be? |
What codes are being shown?

In INPA (in German) it shows:
ECU: EMS2K 1109 AKF-System, Leck erkannt (grosses Leck) In Torque (Android), it shows: Fault code: [P0456] Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (very small leak, check fuel cap, piping, etc) |
check the gas cap to insure there are no cracks in the rubber seal. its not uncommon to see the cap fail because of cracks. Use a factory replacement if needed, you'll cause unneeded headaches otherwise. considering you've had the battery disconnected long enough for adaptations to reset, you may also have a problem with the carbon canister.. there's a rubber diaghram inside that cracks over time (very common in IL).. you'll have to replace the canister, as the diaghram isnt availible separate!!

Buy a new gas cap, pretty simple fix. 99 out of 100 times the simple answer is it.

NEW OEM gas cap fixed mine so far. Had the same code.
The rubber gasket was ALL cracked 2006 R 50 auto 87,000 miles, THANKS MINNIE !!!!!!!! |
Sounds like a vacuum line isn't connected or is a bad connection.
I fought for about a year to find a leak on mine (in my case it was the one under the Supercharger that goes to the manifold) If they dropped the engine to do the work maybe one of the rubber lines is perished and allows for just enough of a leak to pop the CEL and drop the code. Best of luck finding it. Motor On! |
