The presence of soot at the tail pipe does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.
When the car is cold it runs rich and will soot up the tail pipes even though everything else is in good tune. Once it warms to operating temperature it will stop producing soot at the tail pipe.

I have a bluetooth reader, but I didn't think it did any logging. It's OBD Fusion. I wasn't aware it did logging. Sounds like I'll need to do some googling to figure out how to actually use it.
