Got a new noise this week when the engine is cold.

Right after start, there is a scraping sound that then goes away, at approx 7 second in.

Consensus seems to be its the starter but so hard to get to, don't mess with it until it dies

Yep, definitely sounds like your starter is possibly getting stuck upon start up. I had this issue recently. It only really happened when it was cold out, but since it concerned me with how it could potentially damage my flywheel, I sucked it up and decided to replace it. It's not too difficult of a job and if you decide you want to replace it sooner rather than later we have a great tech article that can help you with the job. It is here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...eplacement.htm. We have rebuilt starters as well here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg1.htm#item0 if needed.

Just to throw in my 2 cents, Amazon and Autozone both will sell you a starter that wont fit. Definitely get that starter before it fails and get it from Pelican or one of the other vendors around these here forums.

The job takes some finesse and proper tools to tackle, but it is a quick job, we usually have them done in just over an hour on a bad day.

Out of curiosity, do you guys do the job without removing the exhaust headers, a'la Mod MINI, or do you do it the way Pelican suggests in their tutorial, by removing the exhaust headers?

You are able to get the starter out without removing the header, by removing the heat shields and passenger axle you have plenty of room.
