the other day i noticed a lack of power from my 2010 mini cooper s (72k). i used my vgate and looked for a code and came up with nothing for three days. i checked to see if there was an issue with the boost and notices it was peaking at 3.8-4.2 psi. i checked the codes again while driving today and it finally pulled a p013e code. i cant hear any boot leaks and im not seeing any loose connections anywhere under the hood when it comes to boost hoses. any ideas where to look next and what this code could be caused by?

 

P0013 - VANOS Exhaust-side solenoid valve, control-activation: Open circuit

P0013 - 'B' Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit Open (Bank 1)

 

Those are both p001x codes I'm lookin at p01xx codes. It's pointing get me towards an o2 sensor. Not sure which. Or possible causes. I already replaced the post cat o2 but not the other. I erased the code and had power again. No code in 15 miles, but I'll see if It shows again.

so i found out that bosch o2 sensors do not like to be used in mini coopers. a brand new sensor was the cause of the issue. i threw in an ntk sensor oem spec..... and everything was fine. the upstream o2 was slightly fouled but still in decent shape so i eliminated that as being the culprit.

 

Imagine what the contact points inside the O2 sensor look like, my O2 sensor starting going bad around 55,000-65,000 miles do to all the oil vapors being ingested (half quart every 1000 miles). I certain they would last longer in cars that don't burn much oil, like the N18 engine.

 

it had 64 miles on it. i replaced the original with the Bosch. the difference is only noticable when you take a fluke meter/ multi-meter to the sensor. the ntk sensor worked perfectly though.

 

Is it possible to replace this O2 sensor without putting it into “service mode?”

 

Interesting! What were your test conditions for both sensors? Meter settings? Readings between the Bosch and the NTK?

 

Or did you mean MINI Coopers don't like Bosch 02 sensors?

Thanks's for posting this. I recently replaced my head gasket/timing chain etc, and thought ... Hey! I'll change the 02 sensor while I have easy access to the exhaust manifold. After all, the car has 125K on the original sensor. Yep, I installed a Bosch sensor. After a few tanks of gas, I noticed my MPG dropped 4 MPG (from a normal 36 MPG indicated to 32 MPG indicated). After reading your post, I connected my Foxwell GT80MINI and pulled up the pre-cat 02 sensor, and sure as shootin' the value was ranging between 1.36v 1.9v (rich) when it should be ranging from .2 to .8 volts. I suspect the Bosch sensor is the problem with the reduced MPG, so I ordered an NTK sensor. It will be here tomorrow. I'll let you know what the voltages are with the new sensor.

"Diagnostics: Because of the internal circuitry used in a wideband oxygen sensor, you can't hook up a voltmeter oroscilloscope to read the sensor's output directly. A wideband O2 sensor produces a current signal that varies not only in amplitude but direction. That makes it quite different from a conventional oxygen sensor that produces a voltage signal that bounces back and forth between 0.1 and 0.9 volts."

I installed the NTK sensor today, and Lambda cycled between .095 and 1.05 during various throttle position changes. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking at Lambda when I had the Bosch sensor installed ... I was looking at output voltage. Hopefully, this will fix my MPG issue. I'll keep you posted.

Update on 18 Jun: I don't believe it, but I drove the car on a 159.6 mile loop (mixed driving) and managed to only use 3.59 gallons of fuel (or 44 MPG). I've triple checked the numbers, and made sure I filled up the tank. Stand by for 2d test results. MPG meter in the car showed 36.5 MPG.
