Probably because they changed the engine for the 2010 model year. Not that the newer one is immune...

I believe the settlement includes 2007- early 2010 models...

According to RealOEM, the N14 engine was used in European MCS models until March 2010 production and in US MCS models until August 2010 (2011 model year) production.

I have a 2007 MC S with 135,000 miles on it. Am i out of luck with this settlement?

If you paid for timing chain repairs it will depend on the age and mileage at the time of the repair.

However, if you had the repair done at a dealer, it will repay 100% and will also cover up to $4500 in damage done to other components because of the failure.

I've read that it only covers up to $4500.00 total plus 3 other scenarios.
Should there be some "official" thread started for the issue?

Just to be clear, the linked settlement text doesnt say anything about N14 engines. It specifically lists models by year and ends at 2009 for the hardtop mcs.

I wonder what, if anything, they'll do for people who replaced the timing chain and tensioner them self ??

I'm guessing nothing, unless you can get a shop to write a receipt up for it, which would probably be considered fraud. Maybe you could get the parts covered if you had a written diagnosis that your timing chain failed from a registered shop.

You are probably right, but I have the broken plastic chain guides and my time is worth something.

Is that the funny little rattle noise I get evry now and then when I accelerate? I have an 07 MCS and I have had it into the dealer for timing chain issues in the past. It only has 64K on it and I have all the paperwork from the work they did. It made the same noise before, twice and now it's doing it again.

another issue for those who do their own maintenance, is my new warranty going to be voided because i dont have records of oil changes? Id really like to see the actual full text of the settlement.

This is where I'm wondering where I stand. I had a timing chain repair done at a dealer to the tune of over $1400 and then just 4 months later they said the car had a burnt exhaust valve on cylinder 4 and said the two issues were unrelated. After them originally wanting me to replace the motor for something ridiculous like $10000, they agreed to fix the problem for over $3200. I'm wondering if they consider that as damage done because of the chain failure or not. I'm no mechanic, but I get the feeling the two were related. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Since they're not specifically mentioned in these articles, what about owners of factory JCW vehicles...? Are they considered "S" models under this settlement?

MINI requested all of my oil change records, which I couldn't come up with. Fortunately, most oil change places are reporting to carfax now, so just have your dealer run one for you and that should have most of them on there. If you do your own oil changes, be prepared to show receipts for oil and filters. Naturally, nobody actually keeps things like that. But, in a pinch, credit card records and bank records of charges at auto parts stores should suffice. Regardless, since the warranty is being extended, I don't think they can stipulate oil change records. So, it's probably a moot issue.


As for the JCW - there's no reason it shouldn't be covered just like a Cooper S. Same engine, same timing chain.

I've been in contact with Mini USA about this. They seem to be unaware of the Class Action settlement? I was told to send them my invoice/receipts for the Timing Chain Kit I dad installed at the Mini Dealership 0n 9/26/2015 in Richmond VA. I am now awaiting their response.

They'll definitely be playing dumb - until the class action is truly final, that is. When that happens, you'll have to file a claim with the class action administrator for reimbursement. So, don't be surprised if MINI refuses to reimburse you. However, there's always the chance that they'll do the right thing...
