Help !?! Cooper auto won't drive , rolls in park , steering doesn't lock

Ok ,

I have a 2007 Cooper automatic .

It won't move in any gear ( although I can start it and go through all gears).

Also I noticed that when it is in park it will still roll freely forward and backward

And the steering doesn't lock ( yes the key is out of it ) .

Any suggestions ????

I really really really don't want to take it to the dealer , I have had and heard to many horror stories about them and they are the only dealer within 3-4 hours !

Does moving gear shift lever have any impact on gear selection (park vs. neutral vs. drive vs. reverse)?
If you have steering column pedals, do they activate gear shifts?

From what you told us, it sounds like the gearbox is stuck in neutral.
Best case scenario - your shift selector's cable is broken or detached:

If you don't want to take the car to the dealer, do you have the tools and the place to investigate yourself?
If not, consider searching for a local independent to do the triage.

Good luck,
a
