Loose jack point won't tighten
 

Hey all.

Working on the R53 yesterday and noticed that my driver side rear jacket point has become loose and wobbles.

I quickly tried tightening it, but no go. The screw was turning when I tried to tighten it, but it felt like it was just spinning freely.:confused:

Anyone come across this and how did you fix it?

As I recall, the black plastic jack pads have a push pin in the center that splays out the detents in the upper part of the pad. Pry out the pin and check to see if the detents are broken.

As nc trackrat said, on the R53 and R56 the pad is held in with a pin going through 2 arms that deflect similar to the expansion rivets that attach numerous plastic body pieces on our toys, er, cars. Perhaps someone in the past tried to reattach a loose jack pad with a screw. There's nothing for a screw to thread into unless they used a butterfly bolt and the nut portion is stripped. A new pad is around $13.

Thanks for the input guys, but it looks like I may have a different (aftermarket?) type of jack point installed on my R53 JCW. Bought it used, so...

My jack points appear to be metal (black aluminium?), not plastic. They are held in with a stainless steel screw. There also appears to be a stainless steel "guide pin" located near the screw that seems to be there to help align the jack point while it's being tightened.

Do they look like this?

problem is the toggle is spinning

try pulling down on the block while you turn the screw ... pull against the screw - this will put force against the toggle and hopefully it will stop turning and allow the unit to tighten . . . don't push up on the screw .. a power screw driver would probably work best - while pulling the block down....
