Remote Keyfob doesn't work

Hello!

I have a 2006 Mini Cooper S and just a few weeks ago my remote lock/unlock stopped working on both my regular set and spare set of keys. I have never had to reset them before and I am wondering if there is some magical way to reset them? Please help!!

Sounds like maybe time to replace battery?

1) Get in and close all doors.
2) Turn on the ignition and turn off quickly. (No more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds.
3) Remove the 1st key.
4) Hold the key up near your left shoulder (this is so it is closer to the remote receiver antenna in the rear window (hatchback))
5) Hold down the unlock button and press the lock button 3 times. Release the unlock button and the doors lock which confirms the operation.
6) Quickly repeat steps 4 & 5 for key #2 etc.
If it does not work, try doing the keys in opposite order. Key 2 then key 1, vs 1 then 2.

The keys are rechargeable, if this fails on one key take it for a 30 minute drive.

I've been told the batteries recharge while you are driving?!

@joylove Thanks for the tip. I tried something similar but might have done it wrong. I will try this and let you know how it worked.

The remote receiver in a 2006 is inside the rear view mirror (both hatchback and convertible)

When it says 'turn on ignition' it means position 2. this is the 'Run' position.

After you do it a few times you can get the knack, simply hold the unlock and tap the lock button three times.

So the hatchback crowd have the same gash reception as us cabrio owners huh?

Perhaps the hatchback has a second receiver. My understanding is that there was always a receiver in the vicinity of the rear view mirror -- up in the headliner before 2005, and moved into the mirror itself starting in 2005.

Anything is possible, inventory consolidation, harness reduction, global market issues, supplier issues could all come in to play.

On the 3 series, if there is a diversity AMFM amp, it also does the remote. this is because they can use the rear windscreen antenna for the remote.

Only the cabrios, where there is no fixed rear window glass, did they need to go to a remote-in-the-mirror arrangement, simply cos it's more expensive and less good.

I work on the earlier, two button keys but here's some resources for you three button key owners:

http://www.remotekeyrepairs.com/shop...epair-service/

http://bmwkey.com/

http://www.bmwgm5.com/Key_Repair.htm

Your key is identical inside to the BMW three button key. The first place lists MINI keys as repairs and is in England. The second two places repair the BMW keys and I asked the last one; they will work on MINI keys including changing the rechargeable battery. Be sure to check out the Wall of Shame on the second site, brought to you by people who try to change out their battery themselves.
