I was just curious what other Cooper and Cooper S owners are getting in the real world.

The S is rated at 33 and I only got 27.6 over 3K+ miles of mostly highway driving. This should be a pretty good scenario and I was a bit surprised. This includes the break-in period, but that should be negligible.

I'm getting about 25mpg in almost entirely city driving. I'm only 800 miles into my break-in period however and the AC has been on 90% of the time.

WH Jun 9, 2002 03:47 PM

Now having coverd 3700 miles in my Cooper... 2400 of which were on the cross country trip (Mini's aren't available here yet). I recieved between 35 and 28 on the hwy (the 28 was doing 90+ in Montana and the mountain passes). Now since I'm back in town avg is about 28.... so I bet if I did mostly highway driving again it's be close to 35-38 avg. Not bad.

WH, you almost went as far as I did to get your Cooper. Sound like you're on the West Coast as am I. If you're close to Seattle we should hook up.

Yours got better fuel mileage than mine, though.

Tracker Jun 10, 2002 02:38 PM

Averaged 42 mpg on the highway last weekend. 260 miles and I've still got over 1/2 a tank. Whoo hoo!

City's averaging at 28.

Johnna Jun 21, 2002 12:27 PM

Regular Cooper with only 550 miles. I've run the numbers a couple of times after filling the tank. I've been getting between 27 and 32 mpg mixed driving.

frails Jun 22, 2002 01:57 PM

The best I've done so far is 34. Got a little problem with my foot though. It keeps wanting to press down real hard. Anyone else have that problem.

Normal mpg for me is 29 to 32.

andrew Jun 23, 2002 03:23 PM

Car just breaking in with 350 miles..........26 all round........... 5 speed base model.........average speed 34 mph.....on computer.........

majorfracas Jun 24, 2002 06:59 AM

My last three fillups have averaged 25.2, 21.8 and 26.5 mpg for city driving. Mine is a Cooper with CVT. I've noticed that the on-board computer's average mpg is typically lower than if I calculate it by hand (as above).

Oh yeah, I'm having the same problem with my foot, too. Have you thought of seeing a podiatrist?

CharlesVillager Jun 24, 2002 07:11 PM

I'm coming up real fast on 4,000 miles on mine -- including a 2,240 mile road trip. I've been reliably between 24 and 27 in the city. I averaged 29 for most of the road trip, but my speed varied between stuck behind a school bus while motoring through rural Ohio and watching the farmhouses streak by on the Indiana Toll Road. I'm definitely having the same problem that frails and majorfracas have with my foot.....also, like majorfracas, I've noticed that the computer is usually about 2 mpg low in its calculations.

For what it's worth, when I've reset my computer while doing about 60-65 mph on the highway, the computer says I'm getting between 33 and 35 mpg.

Can anyone comment on differences in fuel consumption between the CVT and manual tranny?

ministephen Jul 5, 2002 11:18 AM

just passed 200 miles and the puter says its around 31-33.. air has been on.... but I havent put another tank in yet so we will see......I am also having trouble keeping my foot off.....but I plan on keeping her..........so I must behave..... a little ....... for the moment......

I'm getting on in age so I don't care how many or few miles per gallon I get! I'm going to be dead a long time, so to heck with it. Ron

smurf Jul 11, 2002 08:28 AM

I just filled my tank for the first time last night, and I am getting 25 mpg. Not bad for the first tank. Also have been running a/c most of the time.

julianvh Jul 11, 2002 08:46 AM

Cooper S

After Break period

24.5 City Highway Combined AC on 60%
25.2 City Highway Combined AC on 20%
21.6 Highway The har way first official TEST AC only 10%
then the average is being between 23 and 26 nothing better, bet I really use mi mini for fun... 3000 RPM ++

dbaux Jul 13, 2002 04:55 AM

My 5-speed Cooper averaged 27 MPG on the first tank, a combo of some city, but mainly highway miles. Although there was a period of 2 hours IDLE time on the Illinois Tollway where we moved 2 miles in 2 hours (literally).

Second tank of petrol has been exclusively highway miles, and is currently at 31.3 MPG.

Total miles on the car is ~ 400.

MCS
33-34 combined city/highway
36-37 highway (70 mph on cruise)
1300 miles
Better than I expected.

Tollag Jul 27, 2002 01:42 PM

Combined for me has been 31.2 mpg (thats what the computer tells me anyways). Now at the 450 mile marker, i'm going to reset the computer, and see what i'm getting...

forozco Jul 27, 2002 08:20 PM

4200 Miles on odo...

all driving at >4500' altitude and crappy Colorado gas.

get 34 MPG mixed driving (50/50 w/AC on 50%) + 38 MPG highway (>40 MPG when mountain driving since you don't step on the gas during downhill portions!)

jackson Jul 27, 2002 08:40 PM

MCS with 1300 miles on odo: according to computer -- I've gotten from 26 (includes hitting 110 mph just after 1200 miles on odo!) all the way up to 59 mpg -- seems unbelievable, but it was on this long, rather flat, some downhill, 30 mph drive at low rpm's with a police car following... I "recalculated" near the beginning of the drive & was shocked.

bbt4 Jul 27, 2002 09:17 PM

yeah,
i drive my cooper s pretty hard too. and i'm getting about 23 mpg for mix city and some highway with about 2.5K on the car right now. i'm not going to worry about the fuel mileage, i'm going to have me some fun with this car. besides, i think the fuel mileage would gain as the car age...

ochichernie Jul 29, 2002 05:35 PM

How do you reset the computer?
Thanks!

BrunoBMW Jul 31, 2002 09:27 AM

My lasted is 29.5mpg for my S at 1350 miles.

Hibou Oct 20, 2002 09:53 PM

I got between 18 and 20 MPG in the city for last 2 tanks  I hope it will get better with time, I have 700 miles on the car.
Milleage before next service goes about 50% faster than real milleage, it looks like service will be required at 7000 miles instead of 10K.
Anybody with these figures?

Sackman Oct 21, 2002 02:53 AM

At 1800 miles the average since purchase has been 32.4 mpg. I haven't reset the trip computer yet!
