Engine won't turn over
So I took my 2003, 5 speed Mini in for an oil change and took it home with more problems. The power steering pump went out, I know, no big surprise, I switched it out with a used pump and the fan associated with it, also put in a new computer because mine was cracked, probably due to taking things apart trying to remove some of the wiring associated with the power steering pump, because the ends were fried.
So...I have everything put back together and only have one bolt left over. The problem is the car won't start now. The battery is new and the key makes it sound like it's going to start but it seems no gas gets to the engine to turn it over. I do hear the fuel pump kick in when I turn the key, and I have just tested that there is fuel getting to the spark plugs. Any Ideas? Thanks for your mini-guruism-wisdom. |
What do you mean by the "key makes it sound"? Is the starter cranking like it's trying to start? If so, I would look at your ignition.

I mean the engine sounds like it's turning but just spins and never fires.
How do I check if the ignition is good/ |
I remember one time after doing repairs and putting everything back together trying to start my car. Turned the key but alas it would turn but never fire. After several frustrating minutes looking over all my work I realized that I did not connect the coil pack back to the computer. I have never felt more foolish.
Don't panic just look back over everything to confirm it is all hooked up correctly |
make sure that your coil is back on that could very well be your problem. Also to test if the spark plugs are firing just take one out and see. to see if your coil is bad, disconnect either the positive or negative side and hold them about an inch away from the coil connector and you should get a white/blue spark. If you have that then your coil is fine

You said you put in a new computer? Does it jive with existing security "stuff" Do Mini Keys have to be programed to the computer? Can you plug in the old computer and see if it starts?
I get myself into trouble like this and those are things I would question and check. |
