I've had it up to here with my front suspension

Last summer I swapped out my old struts for some low-mileage ones from my buddy's '06, so they have very little mileage.

Then, this past winter my car developed a clunking/clanking sound from the front suspension, on the driver's side mostly. From the inside it sounds like a clunk, and when you open the window you can hear a definitive metallic "clank" when driving over expansion joints and pavement ripples at low speed. I let the sound go for a while, figuring I'd start replacing bits soon. I've removed the subframe and replaced the bushings, replaced all 4 ball joints, removed and re-installed the struts, checked the tightness of the top nut, the strut tower nuts, and the end links. My brake calipers are not loose either. Last night I even lifted the car, and twisted the driver's side wheel to see if there was any play. Still, the sound persists.

I've had it. I don't know what else to check other than simply buying new struts and camber plates, but they are so new I'm not sure if I'd simply be wasting my money.

I have the same problem when I replaced my bushing, inner and outer ball joint then clanking went away for a day then came back the next day. I thought it solved the problem but it didn't..I notice some thing though that when I lifted the car for so many hrs. and drop the car the sound go away then come back when all the suspension settled in. I need answer to this problem too..anybody in here has this problem too pls. help us.

What suspension mods do you guys have on your car. Hard to help if we don't know.

I have a 2006 mcsa and has the original suspension

What bushings did you replace? Control arm?

Aeromax Apr 7, 2010 08:27 AM

Nothing at all, other than powerflex bushings, but I know that isn't the problem.

could it be the end links on the roll bar?

Yes. The sound existed long before I installed them.

You know, I actually had that thought this morning. If I have time tonight, I might disconnect them and go for a drive to see if it cures the sound. It's hard to imagine little endlinks could make such a racket, but who knows!

Did you also check the upper strut mount to see if they are torn. Also check the roll bar bushings.

Aeromax Apr 7, 2010 02:40 PM

One of the strut mounts is torn slightly, the other isn't. They too are as new as the struts. The Sway bar mounts, I'm not sure about. I can't believe they'd move around so much that it would make a noise as bad as this.

I too had an annoying clunking sound from my front suspension. Last week I straightened out some minor mushrooming in both towers and installed a Craven STD…and my clunking sound is gone after completing a 1K+ mile road trip. For my repair, I removed both front struts and carefully bent/straightened the upper plate on a table vice, and pounded out the mushrooming from both towers and while test fitting the STD between blows – it doesn’t need to be perfectly flat, just close enough so that when you reinstall the strut and tighten the top plate it’ll be squeezed flat. You should also check the end links on your front roll bar to see that they are tight.

Really? I have a car with coilovers and 807 miles on it and I have the same horrifying noise. Please don't tell me that the strut tower(s) are mushroomed already?

NicoF May 24, 2010 06:40 AM

I had the same problem with my 2006 mcs.I bought a craven STD and put that on top of the strut tower and put a 2x4 on top of that and hammered it till it flaten and no more problem (note) that I removed my strut and spring in the front before doing that.
