Can't read oil
Hey guys I have an 09 JCW and I did an oil change a while ago, and I thought I read the dipstick right but, I just don't know lol.
I need an accurate way to measure how much oil there is in there, cos I don't know whether there's too much in there or not. I've tried a couple of things suggested here on NAM, folding a piece of paper and placing the dipstick in the fold, etc. Also, when I look at the dipstick, there is oil on the metal itself (in a piecewise fashion), and even covers the top of the plastic, is this meant to happen? Thanks... |
I had the same problem as well, so I just sprung $75 large for a Cravenspeed dipstick that's much easier to read and understand than the cryptic German thing that comes with the car. well worth it IMO

yeh I heard about them, and I'm in all likelihood gonna order one, just looking for some way to read it in the meantime so I dont damage the engine

Here is a thread where some one modified the OEM dip stick to make it easier to read.
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...dip-stick.html Now if it reading above the plastic curretnly it sounds as if you have to much oil in the car from when you did an oil change. Just ot let you know even though the manual states (i think) 5 qts it is rally more like 4.4 or 4.5 qts to fill it durring and oil change. I usually only put in aout 4.5 when i do mine with a filter change and it is always spot on where it should be on the OEM dip stick. |
Pull the dipstick out.
Lay it on a paper towel. Roll it just enough to see the oil stain. That should tell you were the level is. |

I just wait until the oil is cool and place a finger lengthwise against the dipstick. That tells me exactly where the oil level is.
