Car won't turn over when hot

Hi,
I am having problems with my car not starting. It starts fine when cool but if I restart it after a quick stop it won't start. After it sits for awhile it will then start. The battery is new, the connections are fine and the ground straps appear to be tight. I removed the heat shield from the starter and after a short trip brought it home and car wouldn't start. I then took a volt meter and put it on the starter relay and had no voltage when I tried to turn it over. (but when cold it has voltage when turning over) I tried taking a jumper wire from the positive side of the battery and put it to the stater solenoid and the car turned over. The car is an automatic so I tried putting the car in neutral when I have this problem but still doesn't turn over. I have looked for the starter relay but not sure if I have the right one. There are relays next to the battery and one in the kick panel. They appear to be fine. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

sounds likeyou're reading the voltage wrong. you gotta read across the potential, load ,open, . go from known voltage to ground along circuit, moving the hot or the ground towards the other . i suspect you have a wire opening when it gets hot . when it cools it makes up .
