Driver's side window won't roll down =(

I just got my mini on Thursday and everything worked fine. I tried to roll down the window this morning and nothing happened. I tried fiddling with the switch, and opening and closing the door (hoping somehow it would reset something:razz:). Are there any ways to lock one window(like if i accidentally pressed something)? The passenger side still works. I just think it's so strange that it stopped working all of the sudden (good thing i have a warranty). I'm going to take it to the dealer tomorrow but I wanted to make sure it wasn't an error on my part first haha.

Sounds like the motor went, happened to mine as well. Common thing on Mini's.

Big Daddy Dec 24, 2008 05:30 AM

My '03 MCS would do this intermittently, especially when it was hot and/or humid. A good hard rap with your fist just below the door cup (that's where the motor is) while you cycle the switch will usually free it up. If this is a brand new MINI (R56), take it back to the dealer.

orvillespooner Dec 24, 2008 06:08 AM

Yes my '03 Cooper also has this problem. You have rap your fist just where you say to make the window move. I am so used to this I just figured it was a MINI indiosycracy, at 130,000 miles I have done this 100 times and it always ends up working.

itsminibtch Dec 24, 2008 10:26 AM

thanks for your replies everyone, i'll try it

AKIndiMini Dec 24, 2008 10:39 AM

If it's under warranty, I wouldn't bother hitting it w/ your fist. It might just free it enough so that the dealer won't be able to "duplicate the problem".

It's very common on these MINIs - I had my window motors replaced just before the warranty expired on mine.

itsminibtch Dec 24, 2008 10:57 AM

Yeah I'm gunna take it to the dealer. If it does it after the warranty expires, I will use the first trick haha

Bajanmini Dec 27, 2008 03:28 PM

Rapping it works been doing it for two years but i hit it right above the speaker

itsminibtch Dec 27, 2008 08:52 PM

I took it to the dealer. I had the extended warranty so i figured why not. 45 min after I dropped it off they call and said they could only cover half because "usually the warranty doesn't go into affect until 30 days after purchase". I called BS and went in to raise hell. Right away a man told me whoever told me that was completely wrong. It still took forever to fix though. Then it was just a matter of if they would get the parts that day. They ended up getting them because i acted so disappointed with the company I think. I also asked for them to make my alarm beep when i lock and unlock the door. (The alarm was included with my mini, or was supposed to be) It turned out there was no alarm on the car (which didn't surprise me because I never saw any blinking lights). They screwed that one up majorly. If I would have never said anything I would be driving around totally oblivious. So the guy promised they'd install it within 15 minutes (stupid promise though, the alarm guys had the day off). Now I have to take the car back again... at least the window works again and I didn't have to pay anything. I got them to give me a coupon for a free oil change and hopefully I can convince them to fill my tank (demand premium of course) and give me a free detail.

AKIndiMini Dec 27, 2008 08:56 PM

Wow, I would have called BS on that too.

So are they installing the OEM alarm, or something aftermarket?

guidmini Dec 27, 2008 09:28 PM

no dealer will fill your tank. Maybe when you 1st buy it. The early gen mini's being 2002 first yr. Did not come with Factory alarm. I assume there installing an after market unit. You see 2002 were not prewired. Also the 1st gen did not have a sensor to tell you when to replaced your brake pads.
thats also something to keep in mind. And The early gen had Power steering
fan motors that would lock up @ times or keep running. Keep that in mind.
or they get real noisy especially when your running the AC system.

The guy offered to fill my tank. Thanks for all of the info on the 1st gen, very helpful. =)

It might actually be easier to have the OEM alarm installed! Many of our cars are prewired for the alarm system, it's just a matter of installing the components and having it programmed in.

I'd hate for the dealer to hack into the MINI's wiring...

Both my '03 and '05 MCS had/have brake pad sensors. They are installed on the front left and right rear brake pads and are OEM parts.

My '04 MCS also has the brake pad sensors, at the LF and RR locations.

My '03 S built 12/02 does not have brake pad wear sensors.

man! I'm bumperooing one of my first threads ever!! Anyway... what do you know, now the passenger window is out. There is no way I'm going to get honda to replace it because I demanded my money back for their crappy warranty a long time ago. Where's the best/cheapest place to buy the window motor? How easy is it to install? Thanks NAMers!

I don't understand your comment that '02's didn't come with factory alarms systems. I have an '02 MCS and it has what I am quite sure is a factory alarm, I have never found any evidence of an after-market system. My alarm system is controlled with the factory key/remote and the light on the end of the wiper arm blinks when it is activated, It even has a working motion sensor. I set that off the day bought my MINI and I tried to trailered it home with the alarm active. Also, the operation of the alarm system is called out on page 31 of the owners manual.

It Worked!!!

I was elated when we tried this and it worked!!

Now when I have to take a ticket to get into the parking garage at the gym, I dont have to open my door to do so.
:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thought it was just me!!!

My passenger side window rolls up and down, only when it wants too. I thought it was broke, thought it was the motor, then one day just pressed it and it worked. Then I would test it (usually on cold days it works)... not on hot days (which of course is when I actually NEED it to roll up and down). I"m going to try the rap thing... It's kind of like fonzie... lol Hey if it works!!! But I'm thinking since this DOES work, there must be a more permanent fix? Anyone know?
